Well, that and Sega had a deal they set up with TecToy. Turns out taxes on incoming electronics are prohibitively expensive, even today, if they aren't manufactured in Brazil. Old Sega stuff lasted for a loooooooong time because they were the only affordable alternative.

Well, that and Sega had a deal they set up with TecToy. Pretty smooth move on SEGA's behalf. Has Nintendo ever let another company manufacture their hardware?

Not sure, honestly. I thought they were looking into manufacturing somewhere else when all the China tariff stuff hit, but I don't know if they did it. Regardless, I'm sure they still maintain control over product design and whatnot in that case.

Felt like I went to SEGA class tonight, hehe.
Wait, I swear I recall some weird story about an old unofficial one man Nintendo store in another country somewhere that they legally couldn't do anything about... or I'm completely mixing that up with something else.

Wait, I swear I recall some weird story about an old unofficial one man Nintendo store in another country somewhere that they legally couldn't do anything about... or I'm completely mixing that up with something else. I actually think I heard something similar, though I'm not sure about the details. Somebody from that country had talked about it on the HG101 forum a year or two ago. Somewhere in Latin America too, I believe. Of course they do have that deal with a Swedish company to distribute their stuff in Scandinavia that they talked about in that recent video Ex posted. But everything is still manufactured by Nintendo, it seems.

Well, I'm not sure if I'm sick or not - I've got some sinus crud going on and a scratchy throat - but I decided to stay home just in case. Which means... I can play another Game Gear game. Streets of Rage 2, to be precise. It doesn't go for a perfect port; in fact, it does add an extra enemy that looks like an alien that will draw a bead on you while he disappears, then shoots when he reappears.
For a Game Gear port, this is a much better effort. Your default combo can do nutso damage; I didn't even use Axel's Grand Upper that often. But maybe I should have, as I found some places where it was very effective. Combat has improved a lot from the first Game Gear entry, as well. Your combos actually, well, combo, and you can knee/headbutt enemies when you grab them.
Still, there's a fatal flaw in this game that will lead to a ton of frustration, and that's the lack of wakeup invincibility or a good way to get off a desperation move to get enemies off of you. I hemorrhaged a ton of lives in a couple of very specific instances where I got corner-trapped, and the enemy would not let up, unleashing perfectly-timed after perfectly-timed move as I got up. That is incredibly frustrating, and it really brings the game down in my eyes. I did still get all the way to Mr. X, but died there. I wasn't playing through it again, so I restored the save state I made there and beat him to see the ending. Another run and I'd probably do a lot better.
I'd say this wouldn't have been a terrible choice if you're in a pinch for a brawler on the go, but I still think Double Dragon for Game Boy beats it out substantially. And if we go for 8-bit consoles, Might Final Fight is way, way better. This is probably a 6/10.

Personally I can't stand the GG and SMS ports of Streets of Rage 1 & 2 at all. I think they play awfully. The only really legit portable beat-'em-up from that generation that I can think of is the GB Kunio-kun game that they turned into Double Dragon II. Apparently Double Dragon 1 GB is not just a port? I should give it a try.

Yeah, it's a completely new game. It does retain some fiddly platforming elements, so just be aware of that. I like how it feels, though; very good although a little more sluggish than the NES game, as you'd imagine.
That Kunio game is solid, too, although it's also ridiculously easy. Duck and uppercut your way to victory!

Dang Sarge hope you get better soon. I'm not a big fan of SoR2 in general, so I've not played the Game Gear iteration. The GG version looks decent enough in screenshots. I think we can all agree on the very best Game Gear exclusive beat 'em up: On a more serious note, you might like one of these Sarge:
