Sarge Oh, bad animation is definitely part of the package. I'm just saying that Jim Power doesn't look that bad overall to me, it's really just the character sprite and animations I don't like. Good call on Sword of Sodan. I think it's a lot uglier than China Warrior in motion. Both animate like bad Mortal Kombat ripoffs, but Sodan is jerkier. The gameplay is even uglier, though.

toei I don't know if I ever told this story on HRG or not. But here goes. When I was 14 I really wanted The Immortal for SEGA Genesis. I somehow saved up $65, and got my mom to take me to Toys R Us to buy it. Well The Immortal was $74 at Toys R Us. My mom refused to split the difference with me, instead telling me to buy something else. Disheartened, but not wanting to waste the trip, I settled on Sword of Sodan. I was looking for a dark and gory game (at 14 I thought gore was cool, also death metal) and I saw this on the back of Sodan's box: "Whoa a dude is being decapitated on the back of the box! This must be awesome!" So I bought the game. (Keep in mind $65 in 1993 is $116 in today's money.) Now imagine my disappointment when I played this pile of bile. Horrible animation, piss awful gameplay. I was so determined to get my money out of this trash, that I did eventually beat Sword of Sodan. According to GameFAQs, I've beaten the 14th hardest Genesis action game. I guess that's a silver lining? I never again spent that kind of money on a blind video game purchase.

The closest thing to this for me was buying a Taz platformer on the Genesis. Taz was all the rage with kids around 1993 - we had this famous poster where he and Bugs Bunny were parodying the Kriss Kross album cover with their pants on backwards, I had a t-shirt of Taz in a Montreal Canadians hockey jersey holding the Stanley Cup (weird marketing crossover, when you think about it), etc. So I asked for that game, fittingly titled "Taz-Mania", probably for my birthday or Christmas, which were the only times I might get a new game (thank god for rentals). And I hated it. I'd force myself to play it now and then but it never grew on me.
I still hate that ugly amateurish cartoon artstyle, and that horrible, horrible music. Even the sound effects are bad.
But yeah, Sword of Sodan is clearly worse.

We can commiserate on Taz-Mania for Genesis. While I never bought it, I did rent it one time. When I was a kid, my parents would let me often rent a game for a weekend. Well, I picked out Taz-Mania for Genesis one of those times. Colossal letdown, led to a boring weekend on the gaming front. I still feel a tinge of anger just remembering how disappointing it was.

I don't feel like I got taken that often as a kid, but there were definitely titles that were less good than others. One I remember was Metal Mech for NES, which GamePro had given extremely high marks. While it wasn't a total trash fire, it certainly wasn't anywhere near as good as they made it out to be.
Also, that purchase of Metal Dungeon. Can't blame being a kid on that one.
Oh, right, of course. I totally bought Treasure Master. Thankfully, it wasn't super expensive, but to me, it looked pretty cool. Had the box and everything. I'm not even sure I ever beat the first level.

SargeIf it makes you feel any better, I have a brand new copy of Metal Dungeon on my shelf too. On a surface level it looks like something I'd like. But you made me wary of even trying it.

Well, I mean, your tastes skew differently from mine when it comes to dungeon crawlers, so maybe you'll like it. It's the super slow battles that killed me, though. And apparently I'm not the only one that doesn't care for it - it's running a 2.93 on GameFAQs. At least in that sense, it's not completely unplayable.
You know, maybe I should boot it back up. It's been almost 20 years since I've actually given it a go. I might see something that redeems it a bit.

Well, I actually think those have more quality to them. I was actually just looking at various reviews of Metal Dungeon, and... well, they're not good. At least Baroque hit a 60 on Metacritic. MD is sitting at a 44.
