Would it really take that long? If so, that definitely sucks. Wait, are you at the final battle?

Would it really take that long? If so, that definitely sucks. Yes. It would really take at least three hours to raise my Zegram's stats/equipment/abilities to an equivalence of where Jaster's currently is. There's a lot of knucklehead game design in Rogue Galaxy, so this snafu doesn't really surprise me to be honest. Just the last straw for me. If you remove the beautiful graphics and sumptuous OST, you're left with very unremarkable core gameplay. The combat design is clunky and boring, the dungeons are bland and narcolepsy inducing, the plot is Saturday morning cartoon caliber, the game balancing is all over the place, I don't care about any of the characters... just ugh. Initially I was hopeful because hey it's a sci-fi JRPG (which is only true 25% of the time at most) and has impressive audio/visuals. Anyway, moving on to (hopefully) better things. Edit: No, I'm not at the final battle. I read up on that too. NO THANKS

Haha, well, sorry it didn't work out for you. I decided to dig up my old save file, so it definitely occurred to me that you weren't at the end. My last save was 63h19m45s. Levels for everyone were Jaster at 56, most others at 55, and a couple at 54. Honestly, I'd forgotten it took me that long to finish. If you didn't hate Secret of Mana, I think you'll have a fun time with SD3. At least I hope so!

To give you an idea of how min/max I was with Jaster versus Zegram... I'm only 2/3rds of the way through the game, and my Jaster is level 52 already. Meanwhile Zegram is like 41 with crap gear. Edit: This review is basically the same thing I'd write, so I'll just refer to it: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps2/929240-rogue-galaxy/reviews/121185The first time I played through SoM, was back in 1997. I remember buying the cart from a pawn shop for $20. I beat it fairly quickly after buying it, and loved it. Then I re-beat SoM again in 1999 with a roommate, and also enjoyed it again that second time. However back around 2012, I attempted to play through SoM co-op once more with my wife... and neither of us enjoyed it that time. But I won't hold that against SD3. I'm going in clean with no expectations, just gonna take the game as it comes. I'm about to read this for a head start: kotaku.com/trials-of-mana-has-no-manual-so-heres-how-to-play-it-1835912791

That's a very good distillation of all the info that's accrued over the years. I originally played through with Duran, Angela, and Charlotte, but the recommendation of Hawkeye, Kevin, and Charlotte is very, very good. Kevin, in particular, is the best physical attacker in the game, especially if boosted at nighttime. I view Charlotte/Carlie as a must for her healing.

I'm going with Hawkeye, Charlotte, and Angela tonight. Fighter, healer, magic user.

Well tonight I put another 30 minutes into Rogue Galaxy. This time the game decided throw me into a one on one boss battle. Forcing me to use a party character I never use versus a difficult boss. Well since the character I never use is under-leveled and under-equipped, he got his ass handed to him. The battle is quite the brickwall as a result. Why not punish the player for ignoring an optional party member? Hyuk hyuk. I now have two choices: 1) Spend hours leveling up the stats of the required character, while grinding up better gear for him, and collecting crafting ingredients to unlock his extra combat abilities. A three to five hours investment.
2) Put this gold plated turd out of my misery.I'm choosing option #2. I've been struggling for a while now to make myself keep playing Rogue Galaxy, and I've had quite enough of it. I promised myself last year I would no longer force myself to finish mediocre or outright bad games, and it's time to uphold that promise. 36 hours of my life wasted on this game, oh well. I now know why no one ever talks about Rogue Galaxy. It deserves to be forgotten. Akihiro Hino is a good business man. He is not a good game director, nor a good game writer.

I will start playing Seiken Densetsu 3 tomorrow.
Yeouch! Hehe, well you and I have differing opinions on a lot of things and you've often name dropped comparisons between Rogue Galaxy and Xenoblade. I like Xenoblade a lot more than you, so maybe there's hope I'd still dig Rogue Galaxy myself (I also wager you might enjoy both Xenoblade X and 2 more than the original, for the gameplay at least, and awesome mecha elements in X).
Can't lie though I'm way more curious to get your thoughts on SD3 finally. Because life is driving me nuts right now, I'm really thinking of jumping into it myself since it's good comfort food favorite material. It's seriously been about 10 years since I beat it I believe, I used to play it all the time prior to that.
EDIT: Missed the new page. I'm weary of Charlotte's new dialect in the new translation, I'm not sure if I can stomach it. Just a heads up Ex ... her speech wasn't like that at all in the old fan translations (which were extremely solid).
If I do hit up SD3 again myself this month, I think I'm going to run Duran, Angela, and Kevin. For one of the heaviest hitters, Kevin can actually learn good healing magic too. I forget if he gets multi target spells though, that might just be Charlotte. I typically burn out with Angela parties because her spells make the battles feel a bit longer, but I've been more tactical in my RPG's thesedays as I age I guess, I might finally be ready to use her and enjoy it this time around.
That article looks like a good read Ex. Just know that class changes are permanent and you'll hit two points in the game with them for each character. I would not fault you or anyone for looking into the classes to try and figure out which one you might like, or what combo might complement your party best. I don't think you can really "mess up" here and make a huge mistake, but yeah no shame in doing some research on the side when you hit those points.

you've often name dropped comparisons between Rogue Galaxy and Xenoblade. I like Xenoblade a lot more than you, so maybe there's hope I'd still dig Rogue Galaxy myself On a surface and interactive level, there's some similarities between the two games. I am sure that Xenoblade was influenced to a degree by Rogue Galaxy. That said, Xenoblade is a superior game to Rogue Galaxy. I'd give Rogue Galaxy a 5.5/10, whereas I'd give Xenoblade a 7.5/10. I think I'll enjoy XCX quite a lot, it's more serious and focuses on exploration very strongly... plus mechs! I don't know about XC2 though. Well I took time out today to setup the game on my old desktop PC in the corner of my dork cave this afternoon. Out of all the places I could emulate the game, I chose the old PC, because it has a superior sound system. I know SD3 is supposed to have a really great OST, so I figured it'd be best played though high end audio speakers (as opposed to ear buds as I usually do). Personally I'd rather see you play Soma Bringer. But if you need known-good comfort food, I understand. Maybe try to use a team setup you've never done before? I understand. I just figure since there's an official localization now, I should give it its due. In situations like that, I go with my gut, and make the best of the outcome. I'd rather have some level of surprise, even if the choice doesn't lead to the optimal class.

Regardless, you'll be fine since you have Charlotte along. Biggest issue you'll potentially hit is lack of healing with some teams.
