toei: Yep. Although SD3 has some other options with teams depending on how you upgrade them. Duran and Kevin I know get healing spells along the way, although I'm sure they're not nearly as effective as using Charlotte, who if I remember right was pretty much full-healing my party whenever I used the heal-all spell.

What do you guys think about using Riesz instead of Hawkeye, as the fighter?

If you choose your final classes carefully, that team could work well. You can easily make some of their skills quite redundant, though. Also, you'll definitely lean on buffs/debuffs more with that party.

I've always wanted to use Riesz/Lise in my parties, but I never did because she's not quite as tanky as the other physical attackers. But you can definitely make it work, considering I made a Duran/Angela/Carlie party work. Duran's supposed to be the most powerful melee attacker, but in practice, both Hawkeye and Kevin outpace him.

Lise - Star Lancer, Carlie - Sage, Hawk - Night Blade. LV50 That was my last party in ~2010. I'm pretty sure I like Riesz/Lise more than Duran now, she has some really cool techs and stuff later on. I recall Duran having more multi hit techs and spells, but she does single hits that are more devastating and useful against bosses or whatnot. Could just be the classes I've tried though. Yeah it's either Duran and Kevin that has "Tinkle Rain" for single target healing, lol. I wonder what that's really supposed to be called. Without them and Charlotte, you'd probably just have to burn through a lot more items and maybe utilize the black market more... I'm not sure but I've never gone too far into the buffs/debuffs. Like I said though it's been awhile! Fans seem to say that Riesz / Hawk have the hardest final dungeon and boss fight, I think it's the most epic in general too. But I've never beaten the Kevin / Charlotte path, which is apparently the easiest.
Personally I always like to have either Hawk or Kevin in the mix, since they both hit twice with melee attacks. Angela and Charlotte are obviously the weakest in that area, but you might make up for it with a lot of spells.
By the way, it warmed my heart to see "Candy" in Final Fantasy Adventure. I love how that's the Mana series' basic potion item.

With Charlotte even as the third, you get her earlier than the rest as well and have her for one of the early game bosses in a cave.

I'm actually struggling a little bit with what I want to jump into right now. It's not that I don't have options, I just don't know which option I want to hunker down with. I guess it's a bit harder for me to make a commitment when there's more length with these games. Anyway, some of the ones that have crossed my mind: Brave Fencer Musashi (duh) Threads of Fate - I actually have a Mint playthrough I should finish off. Radia Senki - I actually made a repro cart of this. That still has the Deja Vu cart shell. I've still got the original ROM chips if I need to restore it. Terranigma - Because I haven't replayed it in a long time. Crusader of Centy - Because I never beat it (but my brother did). Landstalker - Another one I never beat. Neutopia - Would be a good choice in honor of the TG-16 Mini I won't be getting for a while. Soma Bringer - Because Ex has recommended it to me many times. I've also looked around at some more modern platforms, and remembered that the following exists: 3D Dot Game Heroes - I really do need to give this some run again. Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom - I've finished this, but I will absolutely throw out the rec for others. Tales of Graces f - Came out in 2012 here, but Japan in 2010, and the Wii version in 2009. I have a stalled playthrough about 30 hours in. Magna Carta 2 - Oh, look, it's one of those 360-exclusive RPGs. That's not even getting into the PC, where I could roll with something like uber-classic Diablo II.
