Dragon Quest VI - No, the most complete patch out there isn't actually finished. It's good enough, and I beat the game with it. I wish someone would finish that patch up, because I think the SNES version looks nicer than the DS game. I can recommend DQ6 SFC now myself having beaten it this year. It is missing a few rare lines here and there, I think backtracking to one town or area at some point was missing stuff. But yeah I'd say it's like 99% playable and totally recommended for anyone who wants to play the SFC original.
One CRITICAL warning though, I don't know if it's the patch or something emulation wise that caused this, but whenever I would go to the Equip option in the menu, if I ever tried to cancel / go back to make a change, it would soft lock the game. So just equip party members via the normal character inventory screen and keep some save states.
Outside of that and DQ5 PS2, was there any other unique remakes somewhere else?

Oh, yeah, I definitely remember backing out of the menus was a problem in that patch. I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in the README - I always used save states as backup just in case.

It screwed me over a few times. Took awhile to learn my lesson...

Yeah, I soft-locked a few times, too. I didn't lose a ton of progress, though - I think that was in the days where I would obsessively save state. I also used fast-forward a lot when I was grinding.
Of course, when I played through the DS version without those amenities, I don't remember doing too much grinding, so I'm pretty sure I didn't do any more than usual in the SFC version, either.

I think all the other interesting remakes of the mainline games were translated. We actually got a lot of those remakes, come to think of it, plus some fan-translated already. There's a Japan-only remake of both of the GBC Dragon Quest Monsters on the PSX that looks pretty nice to me, though.

Ooh, I'd definitely like to try that one out. Looks nice.
