Poor guys, though. A lot of games had difficulty making the jump, and having to come out after Super Mario 64 had to have been a blow. Someone should give it a play for this month. (I haven't decided if that person will be me.) You have volunteered yourself. Note that I didn't say how long I would play, if I do. Too late!
In addition to DK & Ristar, I was thinking of finally going through Commander Keen. It may not fit perfectly with the theme, but I loved it in the '90s.

I think Commander Keen should be fair game. It was Apogee's mascot to some degree.

One that does fit perfectly from the shareware market is Jazz Jackrabbit. No idea if it's any good. I guess Commander Keen is close enough to work, though. Pretty cartoony, straightforward jumpy gameplay.

Pretty cartoony, straightforward jumpy gameplay. I played a little of the Jazz Jackrabbit games on some random PC's as a kid once or twice (at like friends of the parents or something). Never got very far in them though, I recall the platforming being a little weird like a lot of Western 2D platformers.
They've still got some sick MOD tunes at least.

I like the original Jazz a lot, and the second game also has its fans (I've played less of it). Both games have rockin' music. I actually have the disc you could get through the mail for purchasing Jazz 2 (still have the big box for that one).
Also, I tried some Bubsy 3D. It's... rough. Tank controls in a platformer. It also felt very unresponsive, but I want to make sure that was the game, and not just iffy emulation on the PS Classic.
EDIT: Gonna put this here again, because it's still amazing.

I was surprised to see GOG has the first two Jazz Jackrabbit's!

Yes indeed! I actually picked them up while they were on sale for 99 cents, even though I have the discs. And I may very well hit them up this month.
The best way to describe them is a combination of Sonic and... Mega Man? Turrican? Side-scrolling shooter, regardless.

I started Super Donkey Kong and I can see why people love it. Two weird things:
1) A gorilla can only take one hit yet a plumber on mushrooms can take at least two. 2) Mine carts defy physics and accelerate when going uphill.

If this is your first time playing Donkey Kong Country, you're in for a good time. - I've put together a list of about 25 mascot platformers I plan to sample for this theme. I don't plan to beat all of them by any means, only the ones that are above average.

I was actually going to look into getting The Sly Collection on PS3, but what the heck?! What's up with these prices actually going up? The lowest eBay bid is already over $30 with three days remaining. Sheesh.
I have the PS2 copies, and was thinking about giving the first game a whirl again. But it can get pretty chunky on frame rate at times, so I figure the remasters smooth a lot of that out.
