toei: Man, it would be great. I think I'd want all my melee people to be Alena, though. My goodness, she wrecks stuff.

I do wonder what all the extra stuff is in DQIX S, but yeah it does seem like you travel to some of the past games or something like that. I believe Kaboom is the purview of Wizards. Priests only get a few offensive spells - the Infernos series (Woosh in modern), and if you want to count them, the ones that remove enemies from battle. Do you even get exp for blowing away enemies, or whatever that spell was? I know some RPG's tend to not count such spells as effectively defeating an enemy, so you don't get the exp. I'm pretty sure I was using something in DQ2 though near the end that was like an instant death spell to enemies and that counted. Obviously still trying to remember all the lingo for the spell names... and the various versions/translations doesn't make it easier.

I'd forgotten you beat DQ 1 & 2. You'll definitely like 3, then. It's more evolved, and it ties into them later.

Xeogred : Nope, no EXP or money if you use those. So they're not "instant death" so much as "get them out of the battle". I think it's described as blowing them away (which I suppose fits with the wind motif). There's also a Limbo spell. Some enemies can cast it as well. Don't panic if it happens, though - you can get them back, although you have to go back to where you signed them up. And yeah, not a whole lot of consistency. Well, at least with the modern set. The earlier US releases were fairly consistent (but not perfectly), then they changed the nomenclature when DQVIII came out.

I just wanna vicariously experience Xeogred playing through Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 for the first time. What a magnificent experience that was.

I like DQ series!
So far I've beaten DQ 4-5-9 (DS),DQ 8 (Ps2 and 3DS),DQ Victory (Wii),DQ Monsters Joker,DQ Heroes 1-2 (Ps4),DQ XI (Ps4 and Switch).
I would like to play also DQ Builders 1-2 (Switch)

(oh and I know the SNES version is probably 10x easier and saved me 10-20 hours worth of time). I just wanna vicariously experience Xeogred playing through Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 for the first time. What a magnificent experience that was. It will be glorious to go through a high budget Toriyama world in 3D that's not DB, which I say even as a huge fan of DB/Z, but this is one thing that excites me a ton with DQ8 and the new one.

Just sunk in an easy 2h20m into DQ3. Loving everything! Spectacular graphics, sound, and all. Really great vibes.
The game gave me three female party members at the start though. I wonder if that's because the survey said I was selfish? I thought you had more customization on your initial party, but maybe it's randomized and you find more characters later?
Hero Warrior Cleric (Priest?)
Mage (Wizard?)
I loaded up my old game from a few years ago when I was still sampling DQ and in that save I had two males, but female Mage "Samantha" in both playthroughs.
The Mini Medals are new in this version apparently. They've been easy enough to find so far but I'm guessing they don't shine in the grass like the DS games? I found one under a movable block though, which is an obvious hint. Otherwise I've been finding most of them in drawers so far I think.
I think "Expel" for the Cleric is what Sarge was calling Inferno series / Woosh earlier? This must be the spell that blows enemies away but doesn't grant that exp.
I'll probably just look up what the personality "guide books" are for. Seems odd.

Head upstairs to create more party members.
You definitely want to make sure you get a good personality in this version so your stat growth doesn't suffer too much.
Apparently Expel became Poof in the new translations. Woosh/Swoosh I think were the Infernos line of spells.
Yeah, I've seen so many variations on the class names. Cleric = Priest = Pilgrim, and Mage = Wizard. I'm used to the old nomenclature, but don't tend to use "Pilgrim" anymore since Priest has become a class in the series. Chalk that one up to religious censorship.
