Oh, man, they should just do the Zenithian Trilogy in full 3D. SQEX got a start on this idea back in 2004, when they contracted Matrix Software to develop the 3D remake of DQ5 for PS2: It's available in full English.

Yeah, it's on my HDD. It's too bad that this was a low-budget attempt - I would play through a DQVIII (or even DQVII remake) style for DQ4-6 in a heartbeat. I know everyone loves DQV, but I still think DQIV and DQVI are the better games. (DQV is still quite good, however.)

Both my crazy RPG 2021 and my Dragon Quest journeys continues today!
Two hours into DQ8.
That fully realized Toriyama art... That orchestrated Sugiyama...
Oh baby!
It's quite humbling being beaten by the first boss. My journey log so far, I explored the waterfall cave to the fullest the first time in. While the Hero was learning a few spells, I still had zero MP. So my healing leaves were drying up fast. Oh there's the Orb in the waterfall I need? Well I know Dragon Quest, they generally don't have bosses in the early dungeons... NOW THEY DO!! I was able to prompt the boss with a "No" and not fight him right away. I backtracked through the dungeon, still without Evac (my next level up after this lol), and no leaves, but I was able to Flee my way through all the battles. So I warp back to town once I'm outside and didn't really see the need to upgrade much gear yet, I was close to buying the boomerang. For some reason, I was cocky and lazy enough to not save. So you know what's next. Got all the way back to the boss easily, had 420+ gold for the boomerang, and the boss spanked me pretty easily. I must not have realized how much damage he was doing and the Hero died way too soon, I had a new stock of leaves and MP, but with him gone it was game over. No boomerang for me after waking up at the church haha.
I've heard DQ8 isn't a cake walk. Should be a good time. I'm not too worried about this first boss at all but dang, why did I not save earlier when I had more gold.

XeogredYou have embarked upon a wondrous journey. Dragon Quest VIII is the best traditionally styled JRPG that I've ever played. Definitely looking forward to your opinions as your play progresses.

I just hope Yangus grows on me, seems a little lame for your first buddy haha.
I'm glad the voice acting is pretty solid so far.

Yeah, Yangus is cool. He's the only character in the game to get his own spin-off (a Mysterious Dungeon game). The first Mysterious Dungeon starred Torneko Taloon from Dragon Quest IV, while the first Dragon Quest Monsters starred Terry from Dragon Quest VI. So he's part of that noble lineage.

Was the skill system in DQ7? One of the newer things here for sure to me coming from DQ1-6.

No, DQVII did it very similarly to DQVI. Probably some small differences between the two, but not much. The skill system is definitely a more simplified take.
You might want to cheat a bit and figure out which routes are more worthwhile - it's not always obvious which paths are best, and I don't remember if you can respec, or if the game gives you any heads up at all about what stuff lies along said skill path. I remember putting a lot into Jessica's whips, though - Twin Dragon Lash is astoundingly powerful with a Gringham Whip equipped.
