My only nitpick with DQ8 so far is that it's still got the old school, slow, manual item management in the character inventories haha. I get OCD about their order so I'm transferring from the Hero to the Hero just to move equipment around sometimes. That's on me though. However I do love how items you get from battles/chests go directly into the bag now.
Yangus has learned Whistle and surprisingly Heal so far from his 5th skill I think. I got a beefy axe for him now though, it does seem cooler than a mallet/club.
I just can't wait to have a full party. DQ always makes the slow buildup to the party increasing so rewarding.

If memory serves, the Japanese version actually has the traditional item management - the graphical one we got was added, and is slower... but it does look nice.

Oh wow, that's an interesting change...
Old school DQ for sure haha.
I love the presentation of the localized facelift though, even if it's maybe slower. Fits with the world really well.

Yeah, DQIX isn't outright bad, but it is the worst mainline game (if you play the SNES remake of 1 & 2, anyway). Although I have no idea what X's offline is like.

When I finished DQ9 I gave it a 7/10. A 7/10 for a DS JRPG seems reasonable, but this was a Dragon Quest game so that's a paltry score considering. It's got a lot of MMO poison in it, and the game runs like crap on an original DS. I remember the frame rate would get so bad at times, the actual text speed would be affected. This was exacerbated by rendering all 3D party members on-screen while you traversed the overworld. I eventually used a patch that removed your extra party members visually while walking around the overworld, to help speed up the framerate. That did help speed up the framerate considerably.

That's why DQX's offline isn't that high on my most-wanted translations list. It's literally part of a MMO, so it's probably got even more of that stuff.

Wow, so wait... did Japan not get an orchestrated OST initially?
I'm guessing so, interesting.
But yeah, alchemy pot! This is going to be fun.
One weird thing I've noticed with Jessica around now, is that there's only one main magic stat now? I'm pretty sure the others and a lot of JRPG's in general often have two. Something like simply "Magic" for offensive spells, then "Wisdom" for healing/supportive stuff. But DQ8 only has Wisdom. Maybe I'm just confused with dozens of JRPG's in my brain now haha.
Got the Thief's Key.
Now that I've gotten a few medals from chests I'll ask, are all the medals in this one only in chests? I've been on the look out on the ground/bushes but haven't seen any yet. Then I got worried with some guy at a dock bringing up the inevitable Medal King when I still didn't have any, but after that I've gotten 2-3 now via chests.
Also, there's a handy NPC in Port Prospect that talks all about the Skills and how much more points you need in them for the next ability.

Have you been searching the houses? Medals are definitely not all in chests.

Have you been searching the houses? Medals are definitely not all in chests. Are you 100% sure? haha, because yeah... I know to smash all those pots/barrels and search all those drawers. I'll try to interact with desks and other stuff too sometimes. Haven't seen many of those pouches on the walls but there was some early on.
I'll keep trying to investigate though. If I somehow missed a recurring spot with where they can be, hopefully it won't be a big deal. I'm still only about five towns in so I can just zoom around if needed.

There are definitely some in wall pouches and drawers. Typically they don't tend to hide medals in the first few towns, IIRC. But there's a good chance you missed a couple.
