It's my favorite JRPG on the system, yeah. Been a long time since I played through it, though.

I've beaten Valkyrie Profile too. I don't know how I'd rate it in terms of numbers, but it's not a good game. It's either a failed experiment or a successful experiment in bad design.

This confirms I'll probably LOVE IT. I like the idea of trying to tackle some PC games this month though. I will probably play Valkyrie Profile and VBTM sometime this year anyways.

Haha, yeah, you have a huge range of opinions here on it. I love it, Ex thinks it's good but hates the ridiculous gating (and in hindsight, I don't care for it, either, since it's never communicated clearly), and toei dislikes it. Should be interesting to get some others on this train. I'm really itching to get into Indivisible since it mimics a lot of the style of VP, but I think one of the strongest aspects of VP is the characters and storytelling. There really isn't much out there like it.

a successful experiment in bad design Basically this is tri-Ace period. I like the idea of trying to tackle some PC games this month though. You might enjoy any of these classic PC games that sold a million copies each: American McGee's Alice Blade Runner Full Throttle Phantasmagoria Psychonauts

Ooh, Full Throttle. Definitely one of my favorite adventure games.

a successful experiment in bad design Basically this is tri-Ace period. I agree to a degree, because even games like Star Ocean 2 had some pretty major stuff hidden away that shouldn't have been. It still worked as a game overall even if you missed that content, though. On the other hand, the game has tons of skills that seem to do nothing at all. So not the tighest design.

I really liked Star Ocean 2 as well. But yeah, some strange mechanics there at times. tri-Ace was definitely a bit eclectic with their games, and I can see how they'd engender a sort of love-or-hate relationship with their output.
Although I don't usually watch him much, Metal Jesus has a video where he goes through his "must-play" games, and I find myself agreeing with several of his choices. I was particularly heartened to see Burnout 3 take a spot. The video is broken up into segments, so you can quickly find his choices, but I'll summarize here for those that don't care to check the video:
RPG: Mass Effect 2 2D Platformers: SMB3 FPS: Half-Life 2 Puzzle: Tetris Open World: GTA V Racing: Burnout 3 Sports: SSX Tricky 3D Platforming: Super Mario Odyssey 3rd Person Action Adventure: Uncharted 2 Strategy: Civilization series
Obviously a few modern titles here, but I think you can easily substitute Super Mario 64 or Galaxy for Odyssey, and I'm not sure what I'd go with for open-world, but one could always explore the older GTA games if you're so inclined.

RPG definitely needs to be broken up into turn-based RPG, 2D ARPG, and 3D ARPG. Needs more 2D games, too: hop-n-bops are different from shoot-em-ups, run-n-guns, 2D action adventure, etc. It's so weird to see someone who so highly touts their retro stuff to focus only on genres that survived the modern era.

I don't disagree, but I suspect it was to keep it to a "Top 10". There are a lot of mentions of other series as well.
