Well after playing video games for 37 years at this point, I've got a pretty solid idea of what I do and do not like. Meanwhile I think you write off entire genres rather flippantly, but I don't hold that against you. We've all got our unique tastes in gaming, and that diversity helps to keep HRG interesting. If this place was a homogeneous echo-chamber it'd be pointless. You just forget I play half the games you clamor for... Fallout... System Shock... Front Mission... King's Field... Demon's Crest... Vagrant Story... etc!
But sure, there's always a dozen games or so in my reach that I'm sure I'll enjoy. I don't buy games as much as others.

It makes me sad to think that the days of the DS and PSP may never come back... The 3DS and Vita libraries were close to having that kind of AA diversity. After collecting about 250 games for 3DS/Vita, I was fairly satisfied with their output compared to their predecessors. That said, I do not see an immediate analog for a continuation of DS/PSP -> 3DS/Vita -> ? ? ? The Switch is basically doing double duty for both lineages at this point. Though because the Switch doubles as a console, it's library doesn't have much in the way of games designed with portable-friendly short gaming sessions in mind. Or to put it another way, even non-port games developed for the Switch are not geared towards the handheld mindset.
It does seem true that the future of true handhelds is in peril. I think publishers write the concept off now that smartphones are so ubiquitous. The problem I have there, is the smartphone game market is a morass to put it lightly. Whereas with true handheld games, you got that complete experience when you bought say a GBA or PSP game... with mobile games that paradigm is broken. It's difficult to find good mobile games that are a complete package from A to Z, and not gacha-infested IAP impregnated leeches. Also in my experience, parsing the iTunes or Google Play stores for quality games of any specific genre is aggravating to say the least. Now, I have played some amazing mobile games on smartphones over the years, but frankly they were the exception. Until the overly-monetized lucre-sucking paradigm of mobile markets is transcended, the platform isn't a suitable handheld replacement.

Phones have been advanced in Japan since forever. But have they finally kind of made handhelds obsolete over there too? I wonder what their trends are, since consoles haven't been doing great over there across this generation and the 7th I'd say. While as previously mentioned, the PSP, Vita, DS, etc were killing it over there.
We all know the Xbox is dead in the water in Japan, the PS4 is ho-hum (I hear Europe is its best territory), but I can confidently assume the Switch is probably doing well in comparison and what the Japanese market would favor. But even as someone that doesn't focus on handhelds though, I can definitely see what chema means with a new void being left with handhelds dying off. I would say that the AA tier of gaming has faded across all platforms, seems like handhelds are in a similar situation. While there is an endless abundance of indie games and lots of ports this generation, you can easily say that the output from bigger publishers has slowed down a lot compared to the 7th gen. It must be pretty chaotic to follow the trends as a small publisher right now and with the high volume of releases, it's getting harder to standout.

I should have bought an 8BitDo wireless adapter years ago. Just thought I'd make do and the SN30 Pro would suffice. But since I don't care much for the d-pad on mine, I went another route - that adapter and a Series X controller. The d-pad on there, from what I've seen on my brother's, is really good. And barring that, I have three Wii U Pro controllers that will also work with it, so... yeah. I think it was a good purchase. If I like it enough, I'll buy another, especially since I'm likely going to be spending a lot of time in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the foreseeable future.

I played Cyber Shadow (or maybe it was The Messenger, or both!?) with the Series X controller before I got my 8bitdo Pro 2. The Series X d-pad freaking rocks. When that was Xbox's one lacking design fault across all their controllers. It frankly might be my new favorite controller in general now. But for PSX/PS2 emulation and some other stuff, I do like the 8bitdo Pro 2 a lot too. And I'll still rock the SNES Buffalo or Genesis Retrobit for 8-16bit gaming.
Maybe I should get that adapter to still use my Wii U Pro controller though. Besides the glossy finish, I honestly loved that controller and prefer it over the Switch Pro. But I think you lose some motion features or something by going this route?

Yeah, I think you're right. But I do still have controllers if I need the motion controls, and I'm pretty sure I could use a DualShock 4 as well. (Can't remember if it support DS3, but I've got a spare one of those, too.)

The Nintendo developed exclusives being the exception with some of those controller gimmicks. I think I remember reading Super Mario Odyssey might not have played right with the Wii U Pro controller when I was looking into this stuff.
I'm hoping one of you guys gets the Steam Deck though, real curious for some trusted reviews on it heh.

Thinking about getting a second adapter, but mixing it up and trying the Mayflash Magic-NS 2. I went with the 8BitDo because I saw it had Series X support, but I didn't know there was a revised Magic-NS that does Series X as well. Might be interesting to compare the two - seems like a very similar feature set.

Just bought a second adapter. Works very well from what I can see. Might get a different one for the MiSTer, but this works and two may very well be enough for now on the Switch.
The Xbox Series X controller feels awesome. Excellent job by Microsoft on it for certain.
