For this month, I think I'll go for Gargoyle's Quest. That is an excellent choice. Both Sarge and I are big fans of Gargoyle's Quest, and the sequels it spawned. If you are emulating, you may want to consider this translation: www.romhacking.net/translations/4146/It is more accurate and less blunt then the original Capcom translation.

I've had a lot of Indivisible's music stuck in my head the last few days, but the mention of Gargoyle's Quest immediately put that into my head instead. Amazing how much that soundtrack has stuck with me.
You might want to consider save states, because the game can be very, very difficult at points. I don't use them, personally, but I've also beaten it a whole bunch of times at this point.

You might want to consider save states, because the game can be very, very difficult at points. I've repeatedly beaten Gargoyle's Quest since 1990, so in my mind it's an easy game. But over time I've often read people online cite it as a difficult game. Probably for the same reason people say Bionic Commando is a difficult game. Both GQ and BC require the player to traverse platforming environs using an usual form of locomotion. Flying and grasping, or swinging and landing, isn't immediately intuitive if one is only used to running and jumping. It just takes a little time though, and eventually flying or swinging become second nature. All that said, I do still consider Gargoyle's Quest II to be a difficult game. Especially the Game Boy port, due to its more limited view distance. GQ2 has more sadistic level design, and more aggressive enemies, than the original GQ. In contrast, Demon's Crest takes the difficulty back down a notch IMO. I do think DC is harder than GQ1, but it's still nowhere near DQ2's challenge level.

I do still think Gargoyle's Quest is a difficult game, but not because I don't generally have an easy-ish time with it these days. There are some real sticking points until you get the strats down. The tower is one of the big early roadblocks, especially the eyeballs at the end. There's also a few sequences (the big winged dead gargoyles, the plants that come for you in that stage where you're trying to find the right way through, Rushifell's lair) that can be very tough on a first play. Even the last two bosses need some interesting techniques to avoid the homing shots.
I guess it's basically like Contra - considered difficult, but with repeated practice anything can become easy.
Interestingly, I don't think Demon's Crest is all that hard except for the true final boss, but once again it's one of those "I've played it too many times" situations.

I think Demon's Crest isn't hard if you know what you're doing. Great game still, though. I can't of want to play this series now. Maybe this month should have been Ghouls/Ghosts/Goblins/Gargoyles month.

It kills me every time I play through Demon's Crest, because there really isn't anything out there quite like it. Easily one of my favorite games of all time.

I've tried to play Demon's Crest 4-5 times over the years, even bought it once or twice across the Wii/U VC shops. I think the controls are just too chunky and slow for me. I got a few hours in once at least and got some of the demon transformations. But eh. It'll bug me forever, since I love the aesthetic... but oh well. Super Ghouls n' Ghosts on the other hand is one of my all time favorites, but Demon's Crest seems to have more vocal fans on the net from what I've seen.
I still want to check out the other Gargoyle's Quest games though. If they're more linear, maybe I'll dig them more.

Maybe this month should have been Ghouls/Ghosts/Goblins/Gargoyles month. Sounds like a good idea for an October theme in 2021. I never have beaten Ghosts 'n Goblins in any of its forms. But I did legit beat Ghouls 'n Ghosts on Genesis when I was a kid. I still want to check out the other Gargoyle's Quest games though. If they're more linear, maybe I'll dig them more. GQ1 and GQ2 are more linear than DC. You do traverse an overhead map to go from level to level, but it's quite linear and is more window dressing than anything else. Turns out there's plenty of 8-bit and 16-bit Capcom games I've not beaten yet. Noticed I said "beaten", because I've previously played nearly every one of them. I even owned a few 8-bit Capcom games I never beat back in the day such as... ...which is my first pick to tackle.

I know some people absolutely adore the game, and it is very good, but definitely not life-changing or anything. I also see folks gush about the Moon Theme, but I dunno, it just never did a lot for me. Once again, not that it's a bad tune, but I just don't see why it's so adored. For my money, DuckTales 2 is the better game. It still frustrates me that one of my more distant cousins sold his NES and games for peanuts when we told him to be sure to let us know if he ever did. DuckTales 2 was one of the games.
