Phantasy Star IV was mentioned twice... whenever someone says the want to try getting into the original series, I always want to tell them to just skip straight to PS4. In general, though, I'm all for going back to the beginning when you like a series.

I just want to be clear about Phantasy Star IV. Yes, I think it's the best game in the PS series. That does not mean that I think PS1-3 are without merit though. Even the "worst" PS game, say part III, is still miles better than the majority of 16-bit JRPGs I've played.

I loved Road Rash so much that it had the unfortunate consequence of making me no longer play Super Hang On. Oh, yeah, there are a ton of games like that for me, too. I'm not so sure. I too think Sonic III + Knuckles is the best in the series, and I got my Genesis with the Sonic bundle in 91 or maybe early 92, but before that I was playing on friends' consoles. I definitely played a lot of the early games (Golden Axe, Ghouls N Ghosts, Shinobi, Castle of Illusion were all 89/90 staples for me).
Edit: I should mention that for all the games I mentioned in this thread, I'm thinking of home ports, not arcade originals. I don't own any arcade machines, so I mentally excluded them when I brought up titles like Final Fight or Golden Axe.

Another I thought of is perhaps the TimeSplitters games. Pretty sure the sequels obviate the need to play the original.
There's also White Knight Chronicles II on PS3, which effectively incorporates both the first and second game into one package, leaving no real need to own the first game at all.

Oh dang, I never did get around to Timesplitters Future Perfect, but have always seen it get praised a lot online over the years. Console FPS's of that era are a bit hard for me to get into sometimes now though, I wonder if I missed the boat on that one...
I know Timesplitters was the first game I played with the dual analog control scheme. It was so wack at first... but here we are now haha. The gold standard thesedays.

I liked Future Perfect. And it gets away from the Goldeneye-style aiming, so you can play it like most FPSs at that point.

Half the Pokemon series and the entire Call of Duty series.
