Yeah, Arc the Lad 1 is a ~10 hour venture, or maybe double that if you do everything like I did (think there's a really long end game dungeon if I recall right?)
Arc the Lad 2 is a 50+ hour beast, allows you to walk in towns/dungeons (rare for SRPG's), and it's just a dang good time. Eventually the entire cast from Arc 1 joins up too. So you've really got an army to work with. Even beyond that you can take your Arc 2 save and load up the Arena Tournament game too and capture more recruitable monsters. I normally don't get into that kind of thing, but I loved Arc 2 so much I spent a lot of time in that arena too. Lovely OST as well.
So far my favorite SRPG's are: - Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (played the SNES version) - Arc the Lad II - Front Mission 3 (did the Alise campaign so far)

One of my favorite SRPG series is Langrisser, which started on the Genesis (as Warsong in North America). The original version of the first game is a little rough, but if it's too much for you, I'd still check out the other translated games (Langrisser 2 or it's expanded but easier SNES remake Der Langrisser, Langrisser IV, and the PC remake of the first game). The main difference with SF's gameplay is that the main characters are generals who can hire troop types every battle, so it feels more epic and also has more strategy.
Also, as a fan of Shining Force, you'd probably like Just Breed, a late NES title that's quite 16-bit-ish and also has towns between the fights. And Royal Stone on the Game Gear.

Might be my OCD or something, but I find quite annoying how FFT and other SRPGs put nameless, faceless, not story-related units in your team alongside your actual story-related characters. Either they're expendable soldiers or actual characters, can't have both at once.
EDIT: I don't mind how it's done in Langrisser, since there your characters are the 'generals' and they command expandable and replaceable soldiers.

I'd like to check out the Langrisser series someday for sure. Also Shining Force 2. Surely SF2 is improved over its predecessor.
