Oh, that Cleopatra game reminds me of Tombs & Treasure. I installed Last Bible III on the SNES Classic over the weekend.

Cleopatra no Mahou is alright; I have it on disk. Yes, it looks like Tombs & Treasure, but Cleopatra is much more of a true JRPG. In fact, the RPG battles in Tombs & Treasure were only present in the console version.
So many FDS RPGs are translated now. The remaining ones are super-obscure and, honestly, not very great.

I, too, would be really interested in this. Particularly since it looks like KRIKzz is working on fixing the FDS audio on the EverDrive.

Honestly, the best Famicom RPGs have cart releases. The disk RPG library is weaker overall, with a bunch of oddballs.
As for English translated stuff......
I like Dandy the best. Nothing phenomenal, but a solid Zelda-lite. Decent controls, weak graphics. Gets the job done.
Kalin no Tsurugi is also decent. Developed by the great Xtalsoft, exclusively for the FDS. Has Ys-like combat, but with separate battle screens.
Esper Dream is a neat little Konami ARPG, with lotsa load times and disk flipping. Fun, but the sequel kills it. Nice soundtrack.
Lutter is certainly an acquired taste, but I enjoy it. It's a side-scrolling ARPG, with bump combat, and blocky screen-by-screen stages. Feels like an ARPG Lode Runner almost.
Sylviana is kinda cute, but the combat is hugely flawed, and environments are both ugly and repetitive. Caught halfway between Hydlide and Ys, complexity-wise.
Cleopatra no Mahou is a neat glimpse into early Square. Pretty short and simplistic. Cool setting.
The Deep Dungeon games are utilitarian one-party-member first-person dungeon-crawlers. There's no WRPG complexity, both games feel much like the original Dragon Quest, but in first-person. Neat historical oddities, but they get dull quickly. You can transfer data from the first game to the second, though it gives the player no discernible advantage. The cartridge sequels are superior.
Ginga Denshou is like The Guardian Legend, except way buggier and way worse.
Marchen Veil is janky, ugly, and quite bad.
Seiken Psycho Caliber is shockingly awful. Avoid that one at all costs. A bad Zelda knock-off with a constantly depleting "food" meter. Yikes.
I own a few others that I could mention, but they lack fan translations. My last post made it sound like the remaining games lack quality, but on second thought that isn't true. Aspic and Druid are both pretty fun.

Thanks for the breakdown Bone. Sounds like Dandy and Esper Dream would be worth checking out. Hey maybe we can get a TR month dedicated to Famicom JRPGs!

You'd like Esper Dream. It's an ARPG with projectile weapons. Battles are fought in one-screen "arenas" and you can actually escape by breaking specific spots of the wall. It's a much better game via emulation, due to the disk-flipping. This has to be done every time the environment is changed, so if you enter a town just to buy something at the shop and then leave that's two quick successive flips. It blows. Every time I hear those FDS gears grind I think it's gonna be the last time.

It might not be circumscribed that tightly, but I have a plan for one of the June choices that would encapsulate that category. Just gotta get folks to vote for it.

Haha, yeah. That's why I'm being very careful about the categories I've chosen. Like I said before, they might be comparatively boring, but there won't be a lack of quality titles to play in any of them. Well, no lack for me, anyway.
