The visuals look a lot like Splatterhouse 3's famous cutscenes, especially the blue-tinted screenshot. I'd like to give that game a shot.

So this isn't a fan translation, but it's looking like there may be an imminent release of Goemon for PS2 that was localized by Working Designs and never published.

This is a big one. Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren 2 for the N64 has been translated. It's a RPG! For the N64! Wow. It's a different game than the DS Shiren 2, btw. I played the first Shiren on the SNES, and it's a very solid Japanese-style roguelike; this one looks even better. For those who've never played a Mysterious Dungeon game, the core difference is that they are actually intended to be beaten, usually by building up certain equipment through multiple dungeon visits. They also tend to have a (minimal) storyline, and a town or two. As such, they retain the addictive, random-based nature of Western roguelikes, but they don't feel like you're just playing towards nothing. This one's a good-looking game, too. Looks like it uses a mix of pre-rendered CG sprites and real-time 3D, kinda like Shining the Holy Ark.

Wow, fantastic news!
I own the cartridge and I'd consider the game one of the best titles on the N64, and one of the best retro roguelikes period. Definitely worth checking out.

That is good news indeed, one of the few good N64 games that remained untranslated now is. With this series I have only played this one: Which I understand to be a port of the Super Famicom original IIRC. It was quite fun, but I ended up dying about halfway through it, and lost interest having to restart all over again. (Yes I know you're supposed to store stronger weapons for restarts.) I remember this one had really good music and strong 2D graphics. I own these as well but haven't played them yet:

Definitely looks better than Quest 64...

I know some people love this sorts of rogue-likes, and I agree that ones that are meant to be beaten end up more fun. There is a sort of zen to them, and getting a run of good luck can be addictive. I see the appeal, even if in practice I never stick with them. (Instead, I will take this moment to recommend Brandish: Dark Revenant again, which I will forever be grateful to Ex for getting me to play.)

Brandish: Dark Revenant again, which I will forever be grateful to Ex for getting me to play. Brandish does have some aspects of the roguelike design. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I also strongly recommend this one: It's an excellent sequel.
