The trailer has a slightly pretentious vibe, like it wants to be taken more seriously than it deserves. Call of Juarez definitely takes itself seriously. It'll be interesting to see if the next game in this series* does also. I'm talking about Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, which I plan to start tonight for this Club Retro theme. *There are four games in the CoJ series: Call of Juarez (2006) Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (2009) Call of Juarez: The Cartel (2011) Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (2012)

Glad you ended up enjoying it! It always feels nice to find games for themes that actually turn out to be good.

It always feels nice to find games for themes that actually turn out to be good. It was good to finish a game I legit owned from my backlog library for a CR. I'm going to try to match my legitimately owned games towards upcoming CRs when possible. (Although considering my legit console games are from the 6th and 7th gen, there's only so much one can do there.) I legit own Bound in Blood on 360, so that'll be a proper continuance. If this month hadn't been (and continues to be) such a bear insofar as real life compromising my free time, I'd have gone with Alter Code: F myself. But my free time and headspace isn't quite in 30-50 hour long JRPG territory at the moment.

I probably wouldn't do that one either if it weren't for having almost 30 hours already into it...
Honestly, I don't think it's bad at all, and some aspects I really like, but I think combat is just too slow for its own good. Which, to be honest, is true for most of the series. One could argue that WA4/5 have this issue, too, but I found the hex system more compelling (while still being pretty simple overall), so it bothered me less there.

I'm keen to play WA5 someday due to your praise of it. Also XF has always looked interesting.

I'm keen to play WA5 someday due to your praise of it. Also XF has always looked interesting. I loved XF's gameplay, hated the story. And as with every Wild ARMs, the music is great. It probably doesn't do anything revolutionary gameplay-wise, it just does it so smoothly and with so much variety for a turn-based SRPG that I never got bored with it. I found it much more natural and intuitive to switch classes when necessary than in FFT.

That soundtrack really is fantastic. I'm happy to own it just for that.

It's an unfinished game that could have killed the series.

I don't think I've got to tell you about it, but please avoid The Cartel. I noticed that The Cartel received considerably lower review scores than its predecessors. It had an overwhelmingly negative reception. I will likely test the game eventually out of morbid curiosity, but only if I find a copy for a trivial amount of money, like $5. - I put an hour into Bound in Blood last night, finishing the first mission. I enjoyed the mission, even though it was a glorified tutorial, it was still done well. BiB is a prequel to CoJ, and it was cool getting to play a younger Ray before he became a fanatical gunslinger. Interestingly, when I started playing BiB, I was informed I already had a saved game! As I went through the first mission, I vaguely recalled sections of it, and bits of the upcoming second mission. Apparently many years ago, I put two hours into BiB, then stopped playing it. I do hazily recall doing so, but that was seven or eight years ago. I don't remember why I stopped playing this game either. But as with second chancing CoJ, this time I intend to finish BiB.

I put two more hours into 2009's Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood last night, and had quite a lot of fun doing so. At three hours in at this point, my opinion is very high. Very impressive and fun stuff, and the gun duel (showdown) mode is easily the best implementation of the concept I've ever seen in a video game. Here's an example from the PC version:
