Quick! First game that comes to mind?
What is a game that you've played or replayed within the last few years here at HRG that has left a stronger than predicted mark? Something you randomly find yourself thinking of throughout the months? Are you even sure why?
For me, it's Star Wars: Dark Forces. I beat this game once 20 some years ago back on an old PC with its original release. Then finally replayed it in July 2019 for the Club Retro then I believe. My impressions weren't even completely positive either! But for some reason, this game keeps creeping back into my mind randomly every now and then.
I think there might be a few factors:
- The art direction/aesthetics of the game being one of the first 3D FPS's, is truly surreal and bizarre to say the least. This game has a very striking look to it and vibe. - A personal one probably, but I don't do PC retro gaming often, so when I do hear those old midi/CD tunes, they tend to stick with me for awhile.
Dark Forces is just a very strange and unique game. Does this mean I like it even more than I thought, since it can't escape my mind?
I find Ultima Underworld to be a bit comparable to these feelings as well. I can't even recall when I played that game, maybe ~2013-ish. But when I think about it, I can vividly both hear and see the game so clearly. It's like a strange sense of nostalgia... without true nostalgia, since I never played Ultima Underworld growing up. Again, maybe it's because I don't play old PC games often, so the rare times that I do, they stick out a lot because they're such a different experience and style to me.
The other day, I also saw a Shadow Hearts Covenant picture on HCG101 and it made me instantly smile. Whenever I'm now reminded of Koudelka and the first two Shadow Hearts games, I feel awesome for having played such cool hidden gems.
Nostalgia during HRG's lifetime!?!

Nostalgia during HRG's lifetime!?! Well, HRG has been around since 2017, so we're three years running now. - Games that come to mind to me often, are not games I've already played and beaten. Rather it's games that I keep meaning to play, but keep putting on the back burner. Stuff like Mother 3, Dark Souls, or Mass Effect 3 for example. I'm often reminded of the dozens (hundreds) of games I'd really like to get around to playing before I'm too old or dead.

There's a game that constantly jumps into my mind, and it has happened for years, even before here, and it's Bionic Commando. I don't know why, but it's often one of the games I think of when I'm mulling over half-baked ideas in my head for a game that I'd love to make but don't seem to actually want to put the effort into. I just know that there's got to be a grappling hook in there somewhere.
Stuff since HRG got started, though? Well, it's a game that the boss recommended: King's Field: The Ancient City. And I can honestly say it's one that surprised me. The first ten hours was a bit rough, but then I felt like it all fell into place. Definitely a worthy play.
Others that came to mind after that were Thief Gold and Quake.

Games I didn't rate very highly but left a mark like Hell Night. Not because it was very good - it wasn't - but because it was so different and weird (both in terms of setting and gameplay) and it got crazier towards the end. Countdown Vampire is another. It's very flawed, but it gets better after awhile - although not by much - but it's not particularly frustrating or annoying. It's 'bad' in an endearing sort of way. Sometimes I also think of games that I could have rated higher. Alone in the Dark 4 was quite flawed, but also had many cool things going for it. Unfortunately, bugs and technical shortcomings really marred the experience for me. The final part of the game went full action and just wasn't particularly good. The Suffering I also could have rated higher as I think the sequel being such a disappointment might have messed with my judgement. On a different note, after playing through Dead to Rights last year I thought that was both the most painful and unrewarding gaming experience I ever had. With the benefit of hindsight, I can say that still is the most painful and unrewarding gaming experience I ever had.

Actually there is one retro game that I beat, which I do think about pretty often: I regret the ever living shit out of selling that one.

Soul Blazer. It was then I realized I love the level-up + town-build mechanic. Also Beyond Oasis, probably because it was the first and I think people took my 6.5/10 as harsh when I meant it was good. ... Stuff like Mother 3, Dark Souls, or Mass Effect 3 for example. Mass Effect 3 has got to be one of the smoothest handled Action RPGs. The action is very fast-paced and the leveling up is simple yet has a dramatic affect on gameplay. The plot was entertaining, but had some super-cheesy moments.

It was then I realized I love the level-up + town-build mechanic. Have you played the Dark Cloud games yet? Mass Effect 3 has got to be one of the smoothest handled Action RPGs. I might get to ME3 this year. I've already beaten and super enjoyed ME1 and ME2.

Soul Blazer is definitely one that has grown on me over the years. I used to think it was the lesser of the Quintet trilogy, but I think it's as good as Gaia, at the very least. Simple, but very fun and addictive.

Have you played the Dark Cloud games yet? No, but it looks good at first glance. I'll add it to the list... I might get to ME3 this year. I've already beaten and super enjoyed ME1 and ME2. If you can continue the save (and remember the plot) it does add quite a bit to the game.

No, but it looks good at first glance. I'll add it to the list... The Dark Cloud games are pretty much the epitome of the action-RPG/town building hybrid genre.* Definitely worth looking into.
*Outside ActRaiser anyway.
