I definitely don't consider Caliber 50 to be a run n gun (if we take Contra to be the de facto standard for what a run n gun is), but I have been playing a similar game: Twinkle Tale on the Genesis. It's hard but not too hard and really fun. Instead of the usual war theme, it has a fantastical/Marchen setting. You play a witch and defeat various ghoulish enemies. It's not dark at all, but it's still a fun game to bust out for fall/Halloween. Twinkle Tale is great. I beat it earlier this month, though I wrote about in the games beaten thread since I didn't think of it as a run 'n gun. What a coincidence! And yeah, I only mentioned it here because of the Ikari Warriors discussion going on earlier. Twinkle Tale is the best among that type of game, though. It's in that no-mans' land, but yeah, I agree it's a really good game. Are you using the fan translation? It's very well done. I really like the font they chose and the fact that they implemented a variable width routine with it. Yep, I am. I actually have a repro of it, and everything is done really nice. I'm not sure it's top 10 Genesis for me, but it' up there. It's a real shame it never saw a Western release, as I think it would have been a big hit.

It's definitely a game that if it weren't so blasted expensive, I'd try to own a legit copy. I mean, it's good, it's just not $400-500 good!

I mean, sure, I've bought systems for a single game on launch (Switch, Wii, GBA), but that's always with the promise that there's a lot more that I'll be able to buy. Still, I know folks that will buy a super expensive game like that to play legit, then turn around and resell it. That's one way to do it for sure. Actually, that's a good idea for a thread... hang tight.

I've explained multiple times what I think a run 'n' gun is. It's clear by now none of us agree 100% on what this sub-genre actually is. Some refuse to even acknowledge the R&G sub-genre exists at all. For my personal concept of run 'n' gun, yeah Caliber .50 fits swimmingly. Edit: Interesting to see another person playing Twinkle Tale. Seen a lot people playing that one on this forum lately.

From now on Mario and Sonic are Run 'n Jumps. I will be using this term until it catches on, unless I forget.

Ex If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I like Jump 'Em Ups too, so these are now the two official names for this genre. The Internet has decided.

Jump 'em Ups is okay. I think I prefer Fall 'em Downs more tho.
