Xeogred : I remember reading about that one in Nintendo Power. It was a very late release, and always looked interesting to me.
For something waaaaay off the beaten path, how about Dolphin Blue for the Atomiswave? For those that don't know, that was arcade hardware that was based on the Naomi board and used carts, and of course the Naomi was Dreamcast hardware. It's too bad this one didn't see a port to the Dreamcast. It's an outright Metal Slug clone, to a ridiculous degree. Almost the same weapons, feel, all that. The change, of course, is that it uses a combination of sprites and polygonal backdrops. While they're the usual low-poly stuff you might see in that era, the set pieces end up pretty spectacular.
The only thing that is really keeping me from thinking this is a great game, as opposed to just very good, is that much like a lot of arcade games, it feels technique-less and quarter-munchy at times. The one thing I will say about at least the early Metal Slug games before they start running together in my head is that, while there's a ton of stuff going on, it always feels to me like you can navigate it all. It somehow, despite chewing through quarters, feels fair under the circumstances - the sort of game one could absolutely learn to 1CC if you put your mind to it. While I'm sure there's someone out there that might have done the same for this... I mean, wow, congrats if you did.
In the end, if you want more Metal Slug, give this a go. It took me a bit to get it up and running (need Atomiswave BIOS as well as the right ROM set) in DEmul, but I'm glad I did. I give this a 7.5/10.
And yes, you do get to ride a dolphin.
