Xeogred : I remember reading about that one in Nintendo Power. It was a very late release, and always looked interesting to me. For something waaaaay off the beaten path, how about Dolphin Blue for the Atomiswave? For those that don't know, that was arcade hardware that was based on the Naomi board and used carts, and of course the Naomi was Dreamcast hardware. It's too bad this one didn't see a port to the Dreamcast. It's an outright Metal Slug clone, to a ridiculous degree. Almost the same weapons, feel, all that. The change, of course, is that it uses a combination of sprites and polygonal backdrops. While they're the usual low-poly stuff you might see in that era, the set pieces end up pretty spectacular. The only thing that is really keeping me from thinking this is a great game, as opposed to just very good, is that much like a lot of arcade games, it feels technique-less and quarter-munchy at times. The one thing I will say about at least the early Metal Slug games before they start running together in my head is that, while there's a ton of stuff going on, it always feels to me like you can navigate it all. It somehow, despite chewing through quarters, feels fair under the circumstances - the sort of game one could absolutely learn to 1CC if you put your mind to it. While I'm sure there's someone out there that might have done the same for this... I mean, wow, congrats if you did. In the end, if you want more Metal Slug, give this a go. It took me a bit to get it up and running (need Atomiswave BIOS as well as the right ROM set) in DEmul, but I'm glad I did. I give this a 7.5/10. And yes, you do get to ride a dolphin. www.hardcoregaming101.net/dolphin-blue/ One of these days I really need to set up a MAME box powerful enough to play 3D arcade games. My original XBOX can handle 8 and 16 bit stuff but not Sega Arcade Model 2 or Naomi-era titles...

toei : Can you even clear the first loop of Rolling Thunder? Area 4 is freaking brutal. I can get to the second part with the lava pits, but then forget about it. I cleared it without save states. It took a ton of time and practice, though. As I said, it's one of the hardest games ever made (not counting unplayable crap). And Loop 2 makes Loop 1 look like child's play. It's harder than anything I've ever done in all my time gaming. RT is a very, very spicy dish.

That sounds pretty crazy... but I'll take your word for it on loop 2 being insane. I have 47 minutes logged on loop 1 so far. Sucks that a continue even at the midpoint in a level, will put you back to the very beginning of the level. Granted that's pretty common in most games.
On a random note, I tried playing more Genesis Turrican and yeah I just can't get into this one at all. The sound is terrible as I mentioned with the video... but even more annoying is how taking damage of any sort registers no impact whatsoever. You don't have a kickback, or get i-frames, any bullet, spike, or enemy flying through you will just literally melt your health bar. It's freaking weird and a silly little thing, but it makes me hate it.
For anyone who cares about Turrican though, just don't mix this up with Mega Turrican. The good one on the Genesis.

I'm feeling like playing Metal Slug so this month I'll try to play Metal Slug XX, the PSP port of Metal Slug 7.
Me and my brother played a lot of 7 on the DS, so I'm curious about the additions of this port.

Was able to finally knockout the first loop of Rolling Thunder. Took 1h23m, segmented, no save states. I think Area 4 gave me the most trouble, since it was more intricate platforming with death pits and weird fire guys that multiplied when shot. Area 5 was a gauntlet but a bit more straightforward, being patient helped get through this one.
Got through Area 1 on the second loop. It definitely changes way more than just the enemy speed. Completely new elements are thrown into the level. The funniest is a set of five doors on the ceiling in one spot for enemies to drop down from if they want.
The green alien guy (evil Piccolo?) on the right laughs at you when you get a game over. But it has to be the most pathetic goofiest laugh ever.
Cool stuff. I probably like this and Code Name Viper equally. I'll checkout Rolling Thunder 2-3 sometime later this month hopefully!

Yes, Loop 2 is actually justified in this game because of how heavily it changes the levels. It's not just rehashed content. And yes, dude up there is definitely old, OG Piccolo from pre-Z Dragon Ball.

Evil old green demon, with the laugh of an average man.

This particular race of space aliens just happen to have exactly the same vocal cords as humans. What can he do?

Tonally the green demon's laugh is kind of like Ganon's there, just imagine a slightly clearer voice sample and less enthusiasm.
Anyways, I got a few levels into Rolling Thunder 2. Dudes this series freaking rocks. I'm absolutely loving this one. It's more forgiving for sure, in weird ways. Like I don't think you can die at all now from bumping into enemies (perhaps they need to get that rare punch off to actually register damage on you). And when you run out of ammo, you can still shoot a single slow bullet at a time. It's better than nothing.
The vibes are awesome too. This track really surprised me and even the level itself almost looks like something out of Sonic haha.
Anyways, I think this one has like ~7-8 levels but no stage select if you don't have a continue. So I'll just have to do it in one sitting sometime, but for now I'm hungry.
