Probably that limited texture memory.
It is interesting, though - both systems are really easy to pick out from a crowd. Especially if you see them in motion - the PSX has a look unlike anything else out there.

Xeogred: Thing is, I don't know if having a pure businessman at the top is a good or bad thing. I mean, that was basically Yamauchi, and he presided over both their meteoric rise and their stagnation, and Iwata much the same, despite being the more creative type. I think it's just normal for businesses to go through cycles and miss on predictions for the market. I'm sure we can all think of good products (or games!) that have bombed regardless of quality, and iffier stuff that has somehow found mass appeal. That Nintendo is basically in "swing for the fences" mode every generation, they've got all sorts of opportunity to either crush it or get smoked. I do think that changes a bit now, though - the Switch has shown them a way going forward, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them occupy that handheld/console hybrid space for quite a while.

Yeah, I guess I just get a greater sense of arrogance exuding from Nintendo sometimes. Probably because they appear to be so family friendly and go lucky on the outside, kind of like Disney. When they can be ruthless.
But yeah I guess I don't think I'll be too worried as long as some old guard designers and producers like Shigeru Miyamoto are still around, I'm sure their word and pedigree carries a lot of weight in the company.
Ultimately I'd say, Nintendo accidentally birthing the Playstation was for the best to us gamers and developers/publishers.

Before reading anyone's responses: When did you first learn of the PlayStation's existence? 1995 sometime at school. When and where did you first play the PS1? At a friend's house in 1996. Did you think Sony had a chance against Nintendo and SEGA? Yes, but only because another friend explained whole Nintendo/Sony debacle -- which gave Sony a significant edge.
What did you think of the PS1's graphics back in its day? 3D: Absolutely horrible, I thought the SNES games looked better. 2D: Great. Although at first it didn't seem *that* much better than SNES at first. Later games, like SOTN, the 2D engine started to shine. What are your top favorite PS1 releases? SF: Alpha 3, Castlevania: SOTN, BoF 3 & 4, Dragon Warrior VII, Lunar: Silver Star Story, and (of course) Metal Gear Solid. Ha, looking back the only true 3D game was Metal Gear. Do you still play PS1 today, despite the fact we're about to be on the fifth generation of this console brand? Sparingly. While the PS1 represents the worst generation for hardware (terrible 3D, obnoxious load times from CD, and a lack of well-built ergonomical controllers), the PS1 had the best games. The games make the system. Although if someone here can point me to a good controller I'd appreciate it. Whenever I found one that felt good, it broke in a month or two... =( And no, the Sony PS1 controllers are not good.

Huh, I'm surprised you don't care for the DualShock controllers. Although I don't like the d-pad on the normal DualShock controller, I find it better on the PSone variant that I have (I actually use it along with an adapter for my Turbo Duo, because the third-party controller I have for it is hideous.) Funnily enough, for 2D games (I played a ton of Street Fighter Alpha 3 - great choice!) I used a third-party Performance digital-only pad. Something about the way the d-pad rocked made it feel really good for fighters.

And no, the Sony PS1 controllers are not good. I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing, but I love the white PSOne DualShock (SCPH-110): Super ergonomic and comfy. Mine's been 100% functional for 20 years and running now. I used to use it all the time for retro gaming via a USB adapter, but I usually use a Buffalo SNES pad now.

That's the one I was talking about. Very good pad, in my opinion. Sticks feel tight, and the d-pad is less recessed than the original version (which I also have).

When did you first learn of the PlayStation's existence?
Around, I guess.
When and where did you first play the PS1?
Probably some relatives or schoolmates let me fool around with it a little bit at some point. Not sure which game, maybe Spyro. Stuff like that.
Did you think Sony had a chance against Nintendo and SEGA?
Not a question I ever asked myself.
What did you think of the PS1's graphics back in its day?
Pretty cool, but 3D wasn't something particularly groundbreaking for me as it was just kind of there since the beginning.
What are your top favorite PS1 releases?
Resident Evil 1 & 2, Silent Hill, Galerians, Koudelka, King's Field III, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, Shadow Tower, PowerSlave, Silent Bomber, Future Cop L.A.P.D, Nightmare Creatures.
Do you still play PS1 today, despite the fact we're about to be on the fifth generation of this console brand?
Well, I emulate it.

I went back to check if I'm just blowing smoke... Nope. The regular PS1/PSX controller cramps my hands. Same for PS2/PS3. The PS4 is better.
I held a lot of different controller in my collection/horde, and with the PSX my wrist go in (to hug the controller) which makes my hands fan out.
The one I use is the Dual Impact Gamepad and doesn't have the wrist issue (notice how it swings out more.) Unfortunately, the joystick dies quickly (I've gone through two.)
The "old-gen" controllers don't have this issue since I don't try to hug it. (This is NES, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PCE.) I noticed with the N64, I hold it differently than all the rest, so this might be a training issue with me. Dreamcast (surprising) isn't an issue either, but then again there is no hugging that thing.
Sadly I could not find my original XBall controller.
I did see some SNES to PS2 converters, but then I lose the rumble feature. Ugh, I'm so whiny!
