I do remember the weird look my Dad got on his face when I told him I wanted a Sega Saturn for Christmas. I know that look. Back in 1989, when I told my dad I wanted a NES for my 10th birthday, he gave me that look. I remember he said, "Son, this thing is $100!" (Which in today's money, is $210.) I did end up getting a brand new NES for my 10th birthday*, but my dad was very begrudging about the entire situation. I grew up poor as shit, so $100 might as well have been $1000 to my dad back then. But I did get that NES, so I'm not complaining.
*There's a photo of me receiving the NES for my 10th birthday somewhere. Maybe I'll share it sometime.

I think $400 for a Sega Saturn would have put undue burden on my family in 1995. I got a Sega Genesis that year instead which couldn't have amounted to more than $100. Of course that was probably a blessing in disguise cause now I'm a fanatic for Sega Genesis. Also the Saturn didn't have a very auspicious future ahead of it and 5-8 year old me wouldn't have been very good at keeping up with which Saturn titles were worth pursuing. If you find that photo please share it, that would be really cool to see. Regrettably I don't have many photos of my gaming history.

While I like my Saturn, it (or anything that gen or later) doesn't compare with a Genesis, so you indeed got the better deal. You probably also got quick access to a plethora of cheap(er) games, which must have been nice. Getting a Genesis 4-5 years earlier meant growing up with a trickle than a fountain. Not complaining, but bitd I would have killed to have had more games for the system.

I think having to make do on older consoles might be part of the reason we aren't snobbish about playing old games, too. I didn't get a console (the NES) until I was 11, and I consistently was behind schedule until I bought a Game Boy Advance with my own money. I wouldn't have had the money, nor my parents, to buy the latest and greatest. I was already having to subsist on pawn shop and yard sale purchases, anyway. Which turned out swimmingly in some cases - my complete copy of Chrono Trigger was a pawn shop find for $15! And surprisingly, it wasn't that long after release, either.

I wish I had a photo of me getting my NES as well!
Ya the cost of the Saturn was just ridiculous.

The price quickly went down, though. There was a famous sale for Christmas 1996 where they included 3 games with the console - Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop and Daytona USA. According to this (biased) archived source, it boosted Saturn sales in the US by 500% for a short time (I do remember hearing at the time that it had been a big boost). I can't find what it retailed for, though. May have been 299$. The Saturn I got, for my birthday and Christmas combined, was a used version of this bundle, probably in late 1997. The seller threw in a copy of Dragon's Lair for the Sega CD and told my mother it would also work on the system. I didn't mind, though; at the time, I mostly just rented games, so actually getting a Saturn (which I'd wanted for years) and three games I wanted was insane for me. I've literally never been as happy receiving a gift since.

Cool collection. I did the same with Panzer Dragoon Saga, bought it when it was 150$ on average, played it, resold it for about the same amount. Basically like an extended rental. I forgot to name Albert Odyssey among my favorites. It's a really good turn-based RPG.

I bought a disc only copy of PDS for $96 or so then sold it for a $10 loss when I was done. I actually have a few cases and manuals for some of my games but back in those days I mostly focused on disc only copies because I didn't have much money. If I had the technical proficiency back then to get a modchip working I probably would have just gone that route. Maybe it's good that I didn't because then I wouldn't have any real Saturn games today.

Nice! Definitely wish I had Shining Force III in particular. I should probably look into importing the Japanese versions, at any rate.
Also, Powerslave! That's supposed to be the best version of the game. I found a complete copy years ago that I didn't have to pay much for, and the price on it now is ridiculous. I also remember putting a ton of time into X-Men: Children of the Atom, although not on Saturn - my cousin had the PC port, and it was surprisingly good. My favorite character to use back then was Psylocke.
