whatever they release would likely outclass Sony's system pretty handily A 10th gen Xbox would likely outclass a 9th gen PS5, sure. But this also drives those unsustainable AAA budgets even higher for Xbox devs. Meaning instead of $70 AAA 8th gen games we can expect $100 10th gen games. Or the purchasing model will change entirely, into some kind of subscription based thing with zero ownership. Even then, I don't know if the industry can bare the brunt of 10th gen AAA budgets and ever longer development cycles, something has to crack and give. >This gen is already a pretty middling tech upgrade, despite the increase in computing power From what I've seen, I agree. toei had it right when he said the PS5 is a "super PS4", it might as well be, given the PS5 graphics I've seen. And I could say the same for XBX by the way. There's no huge leap in graphical prowess from 8th to 9th gen that I've seen. Even if the power to do so is there, it still takes insane budgets to accomplish, and few publishers can afford that capital or the risk that entails. So we get compromises built on top of underutilized capability. Diminishing returns indeed.

That's what they're driving for, I'm sure. Bet their next system ends up being "adorably all-digital". Something does need to change. There needs to be a niche for AA titles to come back. Not everything needs a lavish, photorealistic look. And gamers need to stop expecting as such, too, or sneering at said games. But maybe this is where things improve somewhat, because even more beefy hardware can enable smaller stuff to potentially be created at lower cost - it wouldn't take a ton of time to optimize, I'd guess, or potentially need it at all. And we'll see what engines like UE5 can deliver.

The funny thing about toei's PS5 joke, is that's kind of the one reason why I sometimes think about getting one down the road. You'd have access to the whole PS4 library still, then I assume it can run PS4 games in Pro boost mode or more if possible? Then you can get some PS5 versions of stuff if you want the better versions. The controller seems better than the PS4's DS4 as well.
Buuuuuuuut, that's what I've been saying about Xbox for a decade now. Would be cool to have some "all in one" newer Xbox hardware around than can maybe play my OG Xbox and 360 libraries, than anything new if I want. But this will probably never happen. lol, my failure to act on this idea is proof I don't really care THAT much.
It's been rare that I've bought PS4 games in the last few years now. I also don't replay modern games nearly as much as you guys see me revisiting older favorites. I could see the PS4 being another "Operation finish backlog and box it up" in the next few years for me.
At least 7th gens and down still have more unique exclusivity and reason to keep some of them out and hooked up.

Sadly, the One or Series X only plays some games from the original and 360. More than I'd have thought, but definitely no replacement.

You'd have access to the whole PS4 library Well, not the whole library, technically. These few PS4 games don't work on PS5: Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, Shadwen, We Sing. But that's just a drop in the ocean of PS4 games.

Supposedly it's to make sure they have a stronger launch lineup. Which, of course, does make sense - that means they've got a big hitter they want on deck to make a splash, and it ran into issues. Assuming all this is true, of course. Still taking it all with a grain of salt.

IIRC that's what happened with the N64 and Mario 64. So... new 3D Mario?

Still taking it all with a grain of salt. Yeah it's all speculation right now. I've read Switch 2 will be revealed in June, maybe go on sale Christmas 2024. We'll see. Sure hope Metroid Prime 4 is a cross-gen tho. IIRC that's what happened with the N64 and Mario 64. So... new 3D Mario? It's been seven years since the last big 3D Mario ( Odyssey), so a new one is quite likely to be a Switch 2 launch title.
