I'm hoping the Deck will have a user configurable BIOS/UEFI for stuff like that. Let us tinker under the hood. I mean, I'm sure people will be modding the heck outta the Deck anyway. Might as well not even have the gates locked, considering they'll be broken day one. Just put a click-through disclaimer when entering the BIOS/UEFI that says "AT YOUR OWN RISK" and be done with it.

Yeah, it would be neat to be able to boot the OS off of the MicroSD card slot, or an external drive, but one can hope they actually just give the tools to do whatever you want. They've already said you can put Windows on there, but I'd like a clean, non-invasive way of doing so.

A couple of looks at the Steam Deck. Gotta admit, I'm getting pretty excited for this thing. I'm really hoping they can nail down the Proton compatibility layer, because the consistent takeaway seems to be this being a way for Valve to get out from under Windows and Microsoft's thumb. Especially since Game Pass is proving quite the value on that side of things.

Yeah, I checked out Giantbomb's video of it:
You guys are still way more excited about this than me, as I'm never too big on handhelds. But this is definitely one of those cool gadgets I wouldn't mind having around if I had some extra money to burn someday.
What I've seen of Control on this thing actually looks smoother than the PS4 Pro to me, lol.

I'm very much rooting for Valve to make Linux a viable gaming platform. My major professor thought it was going to happen some fifteen years ago, but it just hasn't worked out. But it feels like if gamers can be dragged over to that side, there are very much tangible benefits to making the switch. I did note that they said you can pretty much throw anything you want on it, so if you wanted to wipe and put Windows on there, you can, or dual-boot it. You've got access to the BIOS and all that good stuff. It really is just a PC in a handheld form factor.

Yeah, I'm cheering this on too. I think it's really cool. I think there's "space" in the market for this.
Also... *checks*, so SteamOS is Linux, haha. Now I know.

Yeah, there's actually nothing keeping you from using it on a machine now, although it wouldn't have all the changes and tweaks they're making for the Steam Deck. It sounds like they learned a lot of lessons from the Steam Controller and Steam Machines. Especially the latter, because it feels like they're not just tossing it to the third parties and saying, "Here, have some fun with this ecosystem." It feels like they're leading the charge, especially with that very aggressive pricing for what the platform delivers.

Bummer - the Steam Deck has been pushed back two months. I'm still Q1 2022 in the queue, but we'll see if that holds. I might jump on a nice Black Friday deal if I somehow see one this year for a laptop or tower, but I'm guessing the deals are going to be trash given the state of the market right now.

Ya, this is not surprising will all the supply problems.
My switch doesn't work in hand held anymore (kids). So I was going to get the OLED model, but the mark-up on the available ones is nearly 1.5-2.0X =(

Not surprised on the delays.
My department which uses all kinds of electronics is having lots of supply issues right now. Even for basic stuff like industrial routers or touchscreen HMIs.
