Pretty sure there are no unavoidable attacks in Soul of the Samurai. Personally I felt the opposite - Kotaro's gameplay felt more like proper sword fighting - all careful timing and deadly strikes - while lin's side was mindless and kind of dull.

Well, attacks like this completely bypass your guard:
I found the game to be much easier to play as Lin which made me question whether all the swordfighting was really worth anything since you can stunlock most enemies with her faster combos.

@tsumuri Lin is easy mode, like Jill in RE. That's why she's stronger.
And what you can't parry, you can avoid. Can't expect to be able to parry everything.

@tsumuri: Well, I haven't actually played through the first two Onimusha games. O3 was my first, Dawn of Dreams was my second. That might explain why the silly style doesn't bother me as much as it might fans of the first two games.
I will also note that while tank controls are present, you don't actually have to use them. There's a DMC-style control scheme, further cementing the similarities between the two.

And what you can't parry, you can avoid. Can't expect to be able to parry everything. Fair enough, maybe I should've typed 'almost completely unavoidable'. I see where you're coming from with the Jill/Lin comparison, but I also thought difficulty was way more uneven in Ronin Blade depending on who play as - definitely not that much of a difference in challenge/gameplay whether you play as Chris or Jill in RE. Well, I haven't actually played through the first two Onimusha games. O3 was my first, Dawn of Dreams was my second. That might explain why the silly style doesn't bother me as much as it might fans of the first two games. Aside from the silliness, what annoyed me in Dawn of Dreams - from what little I played of it - is the camera. I don't like how they completely let the player move the camera around via the right analog stick. Feels like they had complaints about the camera in previous games and went with the laziest way to 'fix' that, while coming up with cinematic camera angles that both look cool and are also functional gameplay-wise is where it's at. But I might be biased. In any case, that's a weird way to play through a series, but you might want to give the first two Onimusha games a shot then.

I've started a playthorugh of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. I am playing it with the emulator Mupen64Plus-Next, with 2x internal upscale and downscaled to 240p so I can apply some scanlines. The image is sharp and pleasing, like a beefed-up N64.
Made it through the first dungeon, and the game is fun so far. I like the absurd humor and the gameplay, though rough as expected (it's a 3D adventure game before Ocarina of Time), is still engaging.

Chema: Rough though it may be, I know there are quite a few people that think it's still a very good game. I admittedly have barely played it... but I've had a copy for a long, long time.

I went ahead and started Doom64. I can't recall if I beat it, so I'll probably make it my mission this time. This one is definitely fun, but as the internet says, it is super dark. Not figuratively, literally. I'm having to play at night and turn the brightness up on my TV, which does add to the surrealism.

Haha, I've heard that about the original version for sure. Even the PC ports need some Gamma/Brightness adjustment. I think the sci-fi/base levels tend to be darker than the later Hell levels though. Hopefully they're easier to see.

It's better in the dark. That way you can't see the Spectre Demons.
