It always amazes me how a lot of our gaming tastes overlap, and how they diverge. I mean, I liked FFXIII more than FFXII, which seems crazy, but I know you and Ex love it. And you'd think given that fact that I wouldn't care for Vagrant Story, but no! It's one of my favorite PS1 games.

I can't say I hate FF13 anymore in retrospect. I still think the combat system is incredible, once you can finally unlock it all (or just skip to the superior FF13-2). It also has the ever subjective amazing atmosphere and OST to me. That said I still have some major bones to pick with FF13. Anyways, FF12 certainly has me reflecting back on FF13 again lately, in that I find it absolutely crazy that they went from FF12 to that ... tonally, the two could not be anymore different. Seriously, I don't know if I can pair up two other FF's that feel this vastly different against one another. FF12's characters and storytelling is rather subdued yet I don't mean that in a bad way, then FF13 is so agonizingly flamboyant and overly melodramatic... FF12's world and lore, even the layout of the land feels so rich and methodologically thought out... FF13 makes all the pseudo science in the Xeno-games seem perfectly logical, then FF13's characters are apparently demigods, the Fal'Cie, the I'Ce, the WTF?! The more I try to figure out FF13's plot or characters, the more my brain hurts. I mean, I guess if FF12 wasn't the blockbuster that could have been, SE decided to make something that was the polar opposite in ways...
Honestly if someone wanted to play Vagrant Story for a horror adjacent game this month, I wouldn't bat an eye. Definitely has a lovely gothic/dungeon vibe throughout the whole thing that I loved. I love how the temples in FF12 feel and look like Vagrant Story locations. Probably intentional.

Heh, FFXIII from a tonal perspective seemed a lot closer to stuff like FFVII and FFX, whereas FFXII was clearly going down that Tactics Ogre/Vagrant Story/Final Fantasy Tactics rabbit hole. (I mean, Matsuno, duh.) It's quite unlike anything else in the series, honestly.

Sarge playing Silent Hill would be very interesting, any of them. That would be very interesting. Sarge also showed a little interest last year in playing Dead Space or F.E.A.R., it'd be interesting to see his take on those as well. Sarge maybe you would love DS and FEAR like Xeogred and @tsumuri do!
Xeogred, can't blame you for prioritizing FF12. That game is pure bliss.

I was looking, and I could also scare myself with Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which is supposedly fantastic (and now HRG-compliant).
I'll have to see if I have Dead Space, that's one that crossed my mind for sure. I bet I have the PC version somewhere.
(Yep, it's in my Steam library. From all the way back in 2013.)

I've played Amnesia, not finished it though. I don't think it's a bad game, just not what I was expecting gameplay wise. I may try it again someday. I'd recommend SH2 or FF1 over it personally. I know you like adventure games, and in that regard I highly recommend The Lost Crown. Man I loved that one.

Not sure how I missed that the first time, Ex. I'll have to look and see if I have The Lost Crown... and that's a nope. Well, when I get a connection that's reasonable I might download Amnesia. I've had it on GOG (and Steam) for quite some time, but apparently I didn't download it. I generally try to download anything I get on GOG, so the fact that I didn't... hrm.

IIRC the reason I didn't like Amnesia, is it's one of those "hide from the boogeyman" games. Like Clock Tower or Haunting Ground. I find that horror game design to be tedious. Penumbra was like that too, but I beat that one because it was really short.

Hmm yeah not to dogpile on Amnesia here Sarge, but I also didn't like it. And since I recall you not liking the RE item management... what about candles/wax management to even see in the game? Yep, that kind of killed this one for me. Along with visual/screen "sanity" effects that I can't stand. Give it a shot though, maybe it'll click for you. Not HRG-compliant for a long while, but I did absolutely love SOMA though. Plot wise it is perhaps my favorite thing in video game horror next to Silent Hill 2 and 4. I also liked Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, though that was done by a different developer and many original Amnesia fans don't like it, well... it was a reversal for me there between those two. I think the people that did the excellent Bioshock 2 DLC did Machine for Pigs.

I think the people that did the excellent Bioshock 2 DLC did Machine for Pigs. Amnesia 2 is from The Chinese Room who also developed Dear Esther. You're probably mixing them up because the people who made Minerva's Den went on to develop Gone Home. I thought the original Amnesia was better than the sequel, but I don't like it all that much either.
