Is there a trick to the final boss in Ninja Warriors? That was my only real issue with it.
Beyond that though yeah, I was seriously impressed... I'm usually pretty skeptical of single-plane brawlers, but it felt freaking great. I'll need to check out the remastered version and Returns sometime.

As I recall, there is a pattern that you can pick up, but it's really iffy, and you have to throw way too many enemies at the glass to break it.

Just a matter of getting slightly lucky, and throwing every enemy you can at him. Some characters can do this better than others. I usually have to take a go or two at him to get it, and often times, I'll have a terrible stretch only to clutch it out at the end.
Anyway, I was digging around, and I had a partial playthrough of Alex Kidd in Shinobi World left over from SMS month, so I finished that off. It was... okay, I suppose. I did notice some things I missed, including the fact that if you max out your life, places that had hearts will now have 1-Ups. So it really behooves you to play well early on so you can amass a stock of lives. It's a really, really short game, though - you can get through it in 30 minutes easily.
I'll give it a... 6/10. Yeah, that sounds right, about the same level as Ninja Crusaders and Super Ninja-kun.

I've been messing around with Way of the Samurai. It's definitely a unique game, especially by the standards of the time, but it's also clearly flawed. I'm not sure if I'll complete a playthrough; if I do, it'll be for the story and setting rather than the gameplay.

I have vague memories of playing that one back in the day. I think a lot of your actions or dialogue choices could alter the scenario quite a bit? I'm not sure, I just remember it was a pretty weird game. Not pure action like Onimusha or Ninja Gaiden, etc.

It's an Action-Adventure by video game standards, but it commits to the idea of role-playing to the fullest extent. The whole game takes place over two in-game days; not only your actions and choices but also the places you visit determine what's going to happen. A full playthrough is very short - probably like 2 hours or so- but there are 6 story branches, apparently, and if you die, it's permanent. You have to start over. It can happen quite easily, but there are also various things you can do to survive, such as run away from a fight or even beg for your life. I've probably played it for more than 2 hours, but I actually haven't made any progress because I either get killed or do something I don't like and want to start over. I would prefer some degree of linearity.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World I always though that was a strange mash-up choice by way of SEGA. Props for beating it though. I've been messing around with Way of the Samurai. Nice pick man, it's in my list too. I actually own WotS 1-4, because the idea of a "choose your own samurai adventure" sounds like a great concept. Very interested in your final take, as I've not played a single entry yet.

I haven't played any video games the past few days, due to being on vacation. I'm hoping to tackle another stage or two in Samurai Kid tonight. I have to take a business trip tomorrow, so I probably won't get any gaming time tomorrow. Just a busy real life month for me in general. Kinda aggravating as there's plenty of theme related games I want to play.

I've been kind of curious about the later ones. Wonder if they "refined" things a bit to be a little more fun in general.

About Alex Kidd in Shinobi World - It was meant to be "Shinobi Kid" originally (there are still surviving screenshots), but they inserted Alex Kidd in it at the last moment. It's a pretty decent game, but like all Alex Kidd entries, it's oddly slippery. I did like the move you can do with the streetlights in the first level (wonder if Sarge found it? Not sure if it's mandatory to beat the game). Also, one of the coolest things about the game was removed; the first boss was going to be Mari-Oh, basically Mario wearing Ken-Oh's armor (Ken-Oh was the first boss in Shinobi). About Way of the Samurai - Regardless of what my final assessment of the game will be, I'd still want to check out Way of the Samurai 4, cause I can't imagine that they wouldn't have fixed some of the most glaring issues. There's obvious potential there.

toei: Nope, I didn't note it until I looked at a longplay. I bet it's in the manual, though. *checks manual* Yep, it's there. I'm not surprised at that lineage - it definitely felt like it was intended to be something else entirely before Sega tried to shoehorn in Alex Kidd. They really, really tried to make him a Mario competitor, but the quality of the games just wasn't enough to make it happen. Sonic, on the other hand, had the benefit of having fantastic games.
