Me being the cheapskate curmudgeon retro enthusiast that I am, I haven't beaten a single 2020 release this year.
I didn't get to any 2020 releases either. =(

I've only actually beaten one: SoR4. The rest of those weren't 2020 games, haha!

These kind of responses don't surprise me in the end, haha. It's a retro board after all and I know most here aren't too into the modern scene.

It's been a weird year for me and modern games, too. I've definitely been closer to a 50/50 split in the past, but this year I just haven't been hitting the modern very hard. There are actually some reasons for that, mostly in time investment, that will become clear once I hit my ultimate goal for this year. Hopefully within the next week, even!

"Ultimate goal"? Yeah for me this is what I'm at so far: Modern: 17 Retro: 44 Of course actual game time wise, modern might be the bigger time sink overall since they're often bigger longer games haha. And I hit up a lot of arcade stuff for retro this year which spikes that tally up.

Technically I only beat two modern games this year; Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (Vita) and Fallout: New Vegas – Ultimate Edition (Xbox 360). While we could say New Vegas is retro, as its base game released in 2010, the Ultimate Edition which includes all the DLC, was releasd in 2012. So we could say this version is a modern release. That makes picking out my Modern 2020 Top Favorite very easy: Between 2019 and 2020, I put 117 hours into beating this one game. With that much time sunk in, obviously this was doing something very right. Easily the best 3D WRPG I've played. Highly recommended for explorers at heart, and for those who want something besides anime-trope-JRPGs or Tolkien-esque WRPGs all the time. 10/10 for me, I loved the shit outta this one. Well maybe next year I'll play three modern games!

My Top 10 Modern Games:
1. Streets of Rage IV
I think it's the only one I finished. I had a weird arc with that one. I had my doubts at first, started to really like it for a while, then began to like it less when I tried to play it on the higher difficulties as it forced a really careful, boring style of play. Anyway, I'm sure it's above-average for a neo-retro title. Definitely worth playing through on Normal.

Seems like a fair many HRG members enjoyed SoR4 this year. I'm glad it worked out well for you all.
I still haven't played SoR4 it yet, for two reasons. One, I've never been a big SoR fan in general. Two, I really loathe the art style of the new entry. I realize that's a shallow reason to not play a game, but SoR4's sprite aesthetic just makes my eyes want to barf.

I don't like the artstyle either. It's basically the Franco-Belgian comics style. It's intricate, but I don't think it works for a beat-'em-up, much less Streets of Rage.

I definitely dug it a fair bit but yeah, the aesthetics (music included for me) kind of bring it down a notch. To the point of already feeling a little forgettable in a way. Contrast to say... Sonic Mania, which is graphically one of the greatest things I've ever laid my eyes upon. Basically just imagine if all of Sonic and its remixed/remade levels were beefed up to Sonic CD/Saturn levels of fidelity. The OST was absolutely mindblowing too. Truth be told, I was hoping after the brilliance of Sonic Mania that Christian Whitehead and his team would have been tasked with reviving other old Sega Genesis era IP's and Streets of Rage was naturally my next pick. Maybe in another alternate timeline this is how things transpired and that dimension got a better SoR4, lol.
Sega is pretty dumb to not make a follow up to Mania. But it's already been 3+ years at this rate so I've kind of lost hope on that.
