I never knew the GBA Shaman King game was in the style of Aria of Sorrow (which is one of my favorite GBA games). Very cool. I really like (and am fascinated by) the Shaman King manga and I have a soft spot for the anime (watched it on VCDs haha). I thought maybe I did own the GBA game and just never tried it out, so I went through my GBA stuff. I don't own it after all, I think I mixed it up with this: Rave Master GBA game which I still have not opened haha. I think it is a fighting game though.

If there aren't any glow sticks involved in Rave Master, I don't even know what they're doing.

Also unlike Castlevania, this game has no level ups. You can't grind to make spots easier - the only way to get stronger is to find items that make you tougher or spirits that boost your offense/defense. That's why I stopped playing Master of Spirits when I gave it a fair shot once. This game expects the player to do a LOT of backtracking, which means you will be killing mucho enemies in a repetitious manner. However, unlike Castlevania, all these little enemy deaths aren't consistently making you stronger. Instead, they are just fodder to eat up time and get in your way. If there was a level up system based on accruing experience, and level navigation wasn't so blatantly anti-player, I'd have liked it more. No idea if the sequel improves things. - I still intend to finish Spiral Chaos. I haven't played it since last Wednesday, because the game massively pissed me off that night. But I'll play some more tonight. Right now it's sitting at a 6/10 for me, doubt that'll get any higher.

Well, I lied. There's one more in the books for this theme: Magical Tarurūto-kun. This is another Sega Genesis Game Freak jam, and unlike Pulseman, I liked this one a lot more. It's pretty breezy overall for platforming vets, but it feels pretty solid to play. It reminds me more of an arcade platformer than anything - if someone told me this was in arcades, I would believe them.
The two things that stand out are the ability to grab and throw objects (somewhat like Rescue Rangers, I suppose, without the guarding aspect there), and a glide jump that reminds me a lot of the glide in ActRaiser 2. Also of interest is how much speed you can build up when either running down hills or by executing that glide jump. It'll get you in trouble more often than not, but I have to wonder if there's a speedrunning community for this game - the mechanics seem absolutely ideal for it.
Unlike many Genesis games, colors abound here. I love the look of it all, and the soundtrack is a suitably-bouncy score that doesn't grate. Really, this is one folks should give a go. It only takes an hour to get through. 7.5/10.
(Oh, and I wasn't even aware of this game until last night, when I watched Game Sack's latest "Left in Japan" episode. Lots of interesting stuff in that video, some I've played and some that I haven't. Definitely give it a look.)

I kept playing Naruto Path of Ninja.
Unfortunately, it lost its charm eventually. The game is just uninspired. It's got excellent battle sprites, a good pace and the right amount of fan service, but no ambition whatsoever. When every dungeon is dull, simple and visually repetitive, it is only natural that the game loses all sense of adventure. It starts to play and feel like a generic JRPG.

Sarge I'm surprised you gave it such a (relatively) high score. Yeah, it's pretty, but the levels are so empty and dull and repetitive. I could never stand to play it for more than 10 minutes. Well, maybe the later levels are better. There's a shmup on the Game Gear based on the same license. Also has some very nice, big colorful sprites. Also very boring. I think Ex liked it enough to finish when we did GG month, though.

It does get a bit more involved later. But this is one of those games that, once again, I like the feel of the movement enough to enjoy it. It's a little weird, but not enough to really impact things. Sometimes you just want a fun, breezy platformer, and this fit the bill.

I think Ex liked it enough to finish when we did GG month, though. Yes, I beat that one last year actually. These were my thoughts:
Magical * Taruruuto-kun is a 1991 Game Gear exclusive shmup. It was developed(?) and published by Tsukuda Ideal. The game is based off a manga and anime series I'm not familiar with. In Magical * Taruruuto-kun the player controls a flying wizard, who destroys all manner of yōkai... for a reason I don't know. He does this by shooting ranged offensive magic. Occasionally a friendly witch shows up, which allows the player to choose from an assortment of power-ups. At the end of each stage, the player takes on a boss. This is the case for six short stages.
This is not a very difficult shmup at all. Anyone with any experience in this genre will likely beat it on their first go. The most difficult part really, is the fact that there's no auto-fire to speak of. So having to manually push the fire button a thousand times does get old. Unless you cheat and use an auto-fire compatible controller, or your emulator supports the function. The stage designs are super simple, the power-ups are simple, the enemies are simple... it's all simple because this is a shmup meant for young kids. Probably because the source material is also for young kids. But as a breezy quick cute 'em up, you could do worse than Magical * Taruruuto-kun.
I gave it a 6/10. - I'm on the final boss of Spiral Chaos now. As expected, it's some bullshit. Would you expect these twins to be 20x more powerful than anything you've fought before?: After too much BS, I pretty much hate this game at this point. Definitely hope to put it behind me soon.
