This month's CR theme is brought to us by anayo : (graphic by anayo )
This month celebrates the " light gun shooter" genre of video gaming. Traditionally that means pointing a fake gun at a screen and shooting pixel dudes to death (or ducks). In modern times there were a lot of games like this on Wii (and now you can Dolphin them). It's important to remember most console light gun games also support using the gamepad in lieu of a light gun. And many emulators allow the use of a mouse reticle in lieu of a light gun. MAME is a great resource on the emulation side, for starters. Of course you could always buy a Sinden (someday).

Guess what I found in my closet... a Nintendo Zapper.
Played some Duck Hunt. Was doing well until Round 12, and I proceeded to miss a ton of ducks for some reason. Score was 261,700. Guess that's a "beat".
Clay Shooting - Round 21, 530,000. Can't miss anything at that round. Time to go double ducks!
Two Ducks - Round 15, 232,000. Could only miss one at that point, and I missed three. Doh. Lots of non-perfect rounds, which suppressed my score.

Duck Hunt is definitely the poster child for light gun shooters, probably the first game most folks think of. Understandable as it was a pack-in game with the NES for quite a while, so it was the first genre entry most folks played. Not me though, because I was a SEGA kid initially. My first taste of the genre was instead Safari Hunt on SMS, using the Zillion Laser SEGA Light Phaser. And... I still think Safari Hunt is better than Duck Hunt, if for naught else because it doesn't have that snide dog! Here's what Safari Hunt is like:

I'll make sure to bring my Sega Master System "Light Phaser" back from the folks' place so I can bust that out, too.

XeogredClose, but it was the other way around. SargeThe SMS has quite a few Light Gun compatible games. I think these are the most interesting: - Last night I put together quite a list of light gun shooters to sample. I won't be beating all of them by a mile, but hopefully there will be some winners in the pile.

Hah! Either way, it's funny how far they took the Phaser/Zillion marketing.
Looks like you can configure the mouse and a Lightgun pointer for these in KEGA Fusion? I've never emulated a lightgun game. So maybe pretty much all emulators easily support it and those options are in there?
Might be fun to hit up those Superscope mecha games.

I tried playing Tinstar that way, and it didn't work all that well. But then again, Tinstar is already a surprisingly difficult game.

So maybe pretty much all emulators easily support it and those options are in there? Most emulators support mouse fire in lieu of an actual light gun. I've beaten many light gun shooters that way. Also most console light gun shooters support use of the gamepad instead of the light gun.

Even though it's not a true light gun game, I'm tempted to give The Lone Ranger a repeat run with a Zapper in hand.
