I never tried emulating the VB, but I'd imagine the 3D effect doesn't pop out like it does on the real thing (unless you actually own one?). So maybe that one visual issue you had wouldn't be a problem. I don't doubt that the game isn't super impressive otherwise.

So maybe that one visual issue you had wouldn't be a problem. I played Vertical Force using VBjin and compatible 3D glasses, the emulated 3D effect is very similar to the real thing. The visual issue is simply the amount of moving objects on the screen overlaid the detailed backgrounds. Sometimes there are two shmups' worth of enemies and shots on screen, layered over one another, in tandem with complex background graphics. In those circumstances I was visually overwhelmed at times. I'm not sure how well this game was play-tested, I assume not deeply. It released less than a month after the Virtual Boy itself did (in Japan I mean). I assume this game was rushed through development to capture an early release sales boost.

Yeah, you can use anaglyph 3D glasses (red/blue) with several Virtual Boy emulators. I'm sure I have a pair around here somewhere. I wouldn't mind comparing it to my real Virtual Boy, but sadly, it needs some repairs on it as one of the screens is malfunctioning. Probably the ribbon cable issue they all get.
Vertical Force is a'ight, but yeah, nothing mind-blowing. The system was pretty much dead on arrival. I wish we could have seen just a little more software, given how fantastic Wario Land was. I'm still slightly bitter Nintendo didn't bother porting it (and others) to the 3DS.

I'm still slightly bitter Nintendo didn't bother porting it (and others) to the 3DS. From what I've seen, Nintendo tends to pretend the VB never existed. Although I've seen brief allusions to it in some Smash Bros. games. Edit: My favorite VB game, by the way, is Jack Bros. though the Wario entry is great too. Both of those represent the apex of the limited library.

Having trouble going full screen with Turbo Engine. You guys using anything else for PCE emulation lately?

Ohhh, I glanced over that wiki and just immediately saw Turbo Engine had high "accuracy" so I assumed it was good. Now I see the NOT RECOMMENDED red checkbox to the right.
It's kind of crazy that I've only played or even just sampled Soldier Blade once in the past at some point, but before diving in again I just knew this iconic track was from it:
Already prefer how this game plays and feels compared to Super Aleste.

I put some time into Aleste 2 (1989) on MSX2 today (via emulation). If you are looking for a challenging shmup, Aleste 2 on MSX2 is a challenging shmup. While I don't have the patience to beat it right now, I do think the cover art is appealing: There's a few other shmups I'm looking at though. I'd like to beat two more for this month.

True, that's a great cover. Peak late '80s/early '90s manga sci-fi.
