Tried Gun Nac again, and no, I don't like it. There are too many annoying enemies that take too many shots to kill; it seems like you're maybe supposed to use bombs all the time, since you keep getting them, but then you're mostly passive until the bomb effect ends, so it's not a lot of fun. The level design - which in the case of a shmup mostly means enemy placement and patterns - seems haphazard and thoughtless, like its just throwing shit at you without rhyme or reason, and the bosses are really simplistic and kind of boring. 5/10 for me.

Every time I hear "Spriggan" I think of that Akira-esque anime from the 90s. I guess this shmup isn't related though.

toei: More like use #1 or #4. The rest of the weapons, as I mentioned, just don't seem to cut through the swarms as well as I'd like. I didn't use many bombs until I hit Stage 7. I had to learn fast. Having a good stock for the last level is almost a requirement.

What are ya'll using to play TG16 and TG16 CD games?

I've got a couple of options I've used, but these last two I've used my MiSTer setup on a CRT. It's a bit more dependable than my real Duo for CD games (finicky laser), and has better input response than the TG-16 Mini.
I think as far as emulation goes, Mednafen is the best option. Mednafen is a pain to configure, though, so it is probably better to use the Beetle fork of it in RetroArch. I've used that on my PS Classic and it seems to work really well. Ootake isn't a bad option, either.

What are ya'll using to play TG16 and TG16 CD games? On PC, Ootake. Mednafen works well too, if you can stomach its interface.

Yeah, Ootake is very underrated. I've been using it for years.

Last time I used it was in 2011. I remember liking it but seems like I have some troubleshooting to do.

So, I've just made a legit run through Seirei Senshi Spriggan. It sure is a Compile game. I don't think I liked it any worse than Gun-Nac, so I'll give it a 7.5. It didn't wow me, because there were moments that certainly felt on auto-pilot, then it's like, "oh yeah, how do you like this?!" Weapon loadout, as always, is incredibly important, but it's weird here, as your bombs and power-ups are basically the same. That means you'll have to expend a full-power shot if you want to bomb (sometimes needed). Your willingness to do so may hinge on how good your current weapon is. You could grab an iffy orb and be in a bad spot for a while, or snag one that lets you rip through stuff. I think my favorite combo was two yellow, one blue (or vice versa, perhaps) that gave a powerful round blast shot to the left and right of your ship, but nothing in the middle. The offset helps stay away from enemy fire in many instances, and it seems to shred through tons of enemies well. It always sucks losing that one. Another good one is when you get a shield surrounding, and the fire shot that zigzags in front of you, which also lets you fire off-angle. Anyway, the game is also nice enough that, if you survive the gauntlet that is the sixth level, the seventh is just the final boss. So you can take as many shots as you need; in my case, I got him on my second try. It's clearly not an insanely difficult shooter if I can get through it legit!

So I've started messing with Download. This is the type of game that has infinite credits and it's still hard. It's the type of game where beating the first level, with infinite credits, is actually pretty hard. Anyway. As I recall I made it somewhere in the second stage when I was focusing on shmups in 2019.
Back when engrish was a big topic on the Internet, it was also known for its foul mouth. This is the game that has your player saying things like "I CANNOT FUCK UP FOR THIS" and "SHIT. IS NOT THIS A GREAT BEGINNING" when you die early on. I get it, though. I'd swear a lot if I was this guy. He didn't pick an easy mission.
