It's a playtime I'd expect from a handheld shmup rather than console.
Meanwhile I was going to play Spriggan Mark 2 - Re-Terraform Project tonight, but it's 1.5-2 hours long. Mainly because it has a lot of cutscenes, which would be fine, except I don't read/speak Japanese. The game itself looks great, but I prefer shmups to be less than an hour long.

Yeah, if they're that long, they probably need to have passwords or something.

I meant to mention this to EasyHard, since I was using Ootake this evening. If you want a primer on Ootake this one is good: www.fantasyanime.com/emuhelp/ootakeIt really is a solid emulator. Replaced the ol' MagicEngine for me. I'll miss that little bunny girl.

That's the reason I never seriously tried to beat Robo Aleste. That game is long. There's 12 stages, and they're all Compile-length stages.

Ex The problem turned out to be the copy of the game. I think it is fixed now.

Since R-Type Final 2 came out recently (and looks just okay?) does anyone here remember much of the original Final on PS2? I beat it... but it's been so long and didn't leave enough of an impression on me to recall much at this point. I might give it another look soon.
Been pretty busy lately though, haven't gotten around to any shmups yet.

I've made a lot of progress in Download. In fact, I think I just died to the final boss. I might talk about it a bit more later - I haven't written something like a review in forever, feels like - but I'll just say that I like it a lot. Definitely going to hit up Download 2 next, even if it seems a lot more generic/less interesting. I also got ahold of the one-episode OVA.

Title: MUSHA: Metallic Uniframe Super Hybrid Armor Platform: Genesis Region release played: USA Year of release: 1990 Developer: Compile Publisher: Seismic Graphics: 3/5 Audio: 4/5 Challenge: 4/5 Fun factor: 2/5 Quick Thoughts: MUSHA: Metallic Uniframe Super Hybrid Armor is a Genesis exclusive shmup, originally named Musha Aleste in Japan. The game design is similar to other Aleste titles, though a distinct Japanese cultural aesthetic is overlaid the conventional future-techno environs. The experience often felt monotonous and unexciting, but not without technical merit. There's some nice parallax scrolling, the sound programmers included frequency modulation to mimic the doppler effect, and the OST itself approximates speed metal. MUSHA is held in high esteem with retro action gamers, but for me this just felt like Compile on autopilot.
+High energy OST. +Can manually alternate firing pattern. +Nice intro CG for its time. +The mission briefings/debriefings add a sense of purpose. +The Noh boss was visually interesting.
-Seven long boring monotonous stages. -Unexciting bosses. -No super bombs / screen clearing bombs. -Bland primary weapons. -Paint by numbers design, no strides towards innovation.
Ex's time to beat: 45 minutes (I used savestates) Ex's rating: 6/10

I gave MUSHA a 7/10, but I absolutely agree that it's overrated. There are other Compile games that I much prefer.

Legit run of Robo Aleste. It was... a'ight, I guess. Lots of the same problems as MUSHA, in my opinion. I'm thinking either 6.5 or 7, because what's here isn't bad, but it definitely doesn't feel like peak Compile.
