Well, it's happening, and I'm in charge of this month. I also happen to turn 42, which as any good nerd would know, is the answer to the great question of life, the universe, and everything. So what better way for (me) to celebrate than through a collection of games that are some of my absolute favorites? And force you all to go along with me? So I put this list of 42 games together a while back while I was ruminating. These are some of my absolute favorite games of all time, encompassing both mega-hits and cult classics. Hopefully you'll find something you enjoy in the mix! But in the off chance that you're like, "Nah, none of this works for me", I will play dictator and approve games based solely on my own whims, although I suspect I will get the answer out faster than Deep Thought did. (Also, fun fact, the book was first published in 1979, 42 years ago. No coincidence, methinks.) Kirby's Adventure Dragon Warrior IV Crystalis Willow Contra Tecmo Super Bowl Double Dragon II Bionic Commando Front Mission: Gun Hazard Demon's Crest Terranigma Chrono Trigger Yoshi's Island Ganbare Goemon 3 Lufia II Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Alundra Valkyrie Profile Ape Escape Metal Gear Solid Sly 2 Wild ARMs 5 Shadow Hearts: Covenant Dragon Quest VIII Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando Brandish: Dark Revenant Ghost Trick Paper Mario Lunar: Eternal Blue Gunstar Heroes Beyond Oasis Phantasy Star IV Streets of Rage 2 Shinobi III Ristar Shining Force II Link's Awakening Gargoyle's Quest Soldier Blade Panzer Dragoon Saga Minish Cap Drill Dozer

Interesting theme, quite imaginative. Back in 1997 I read the entirety of tHGttG (all five books). Great stuff. From your list, I've already beaten these: Kirby's Adventure Dragon Warrior IV Contra Double Dragon II Bionic Commando Front Mission: Gun Hazard Demon's Crest Chrono Trigger Yoshi's Island Lufia II Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Valkyrie Profile Ape Escape Metal Gear Solid Shadow Hearts: Covenant Dragon Quest VIII Brandish: Dark Revenant Ghost Trick Paper Mario Gunstar Heroes Phantasy Star IV Streets of Rage 2 Shinobi III Ristar Link's Awakening Gargoyle's Quest Soldier Blade Minish Cap Drill Dozer
I've sampled (or played a significant portion of) these, but didn't care for them: Willow Tecmo Super Bowl Terranigma Alundra Sly 2 Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando Panzer Dragoon Saga
So I'll see what I can do with these: Beyond Oasis Crystalis Ganbare Goemon 3 Shining Force II

I'm actually going to pre-approve if anyone wants to give the Infocom text adventure of Hitchhiker a go. Seems appropriate. There are a lot of popular games in there, in retrospect, so I'm at least a little concerned folks have beaten most of these like you have. That's why I'm leaving the door open for an override if needed. Also, hacks for these games if you've already finished them are on the table. I'm seriously considering running through Lunar 2 or Alundra via the UnWorked patches.

I love this idea! I've played and beaten a chunk of them, but I'll bold the ones I haven't really touched at all or not spent enough time with.
Kirby's Adventure - Legendary, Kirby peaked right here Dragon Warrior IV - Well, I beat the DS version. I'll have to give the NES one a look someday Crystalis Willow Contra - Perfection Tecmo Super Bowl Double Dragon II
Bionic Commando - Tried it several times, not for me I guess
Front Mission: Gun Hazard - So dang good
Demon's Crest - Tried it several times, not for me I guess Terranigma - Flawed but the peaks are incredible Chrono Trigger - Classic Yoshi's Island - I've come to realize this one is better than I thought back in the day, whenever I go back to it now. Probably beats DKC2-3 for me, but not DKC1 or SMW Ganbare Goemon 3 Lufia II - I got hours into this one but admittedly fell off for some reason. Got busy with other stuff.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Masterpiece Alundra - Enjoyed the bit I played but the platforming was annoying. Never beat it, so I'll give it another spin someday. Valkyrie Profile Ape Escape Metal Gear Solid - One of the GOAT's
Sly 2 - Excellent but I might like Sly 1 more Wild ARMs 5 Shadow Hearts: Covenant - Definitely one of the best PS2 JRPG's and I played it recently Dragon Quest VIII Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando - Quite possibly my favorite R&C as well. This is one of those sequels that is such a huge step up from the first game it's almost hard to believe how it perfected everything so well and got it all right.
Brandish: Dark Revenant
Ghost Trick
Paper Mario
Lunar: Eternal Blue - Got far in both Lunar's on the PSX and never beat them. More JRPG casualties from back in the day...
Gunstar Heroes
Beyond Oasis - I can never seem to get into it. Phantasy Star IV - You all saw me beat it this year. Probably going to be my 2021 favorite retro game. Easily... Streets of Rage 2 - One of the GOAT's Shinobi III - The most nostalgic inducing game of my life. Perfection. Ristar - Incredible and deserves more love. Been awhile on this one so I should replay it soon! Shining Force II
Link's Awakening - The best handheld game ever made. Gargoyle's Quest
Soldier Blade
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Minish Cap - I didn't love it but it's been so long, I'm due for a replay to see what I think another time through. Drill Dozer

Beaten: Kirby's Adventure Crystalis Contra Tecmo Super Bowl Double Dragon II Demon's Crest Chrono Trigger Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Dragon Quest VIII
Metal Gear Solid Beyond Oasis Shinobi III Ristar Soldier Blade Not beaten: Dragon Warrior IV Willow Bionic Commando Front Mission: Gun Hazard Terranigma Yoshi's Island Ganbare Goemon 3 Lufia II Alundra Ape Escape Sly 2 Wild ARMs 5 Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Valkyrie Profile Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando Brandish: Dark Revenant Ghost Trick Lunar: Eternal Blue Gunstar Heroes Phantasy Star IV Streets of Rage 2 Shining Force II Link's Awakening Gargoyle's Quest Panzer Dragoon Saga Minish Cap Drill Dozer That is quite the selection for non-beaten. Since I've beaten Dragon Warrior 1, 2, 7, and 8, I'll do 4. Unless you believe I should complete 3 first. Crystalis Ganbare Goemon 3 Shining Force II
First one, then you can finally know what happened on 1997, October 1, The END DAY.

I think I decided what I might play. I might be the only person here who hasn't beaten it yet.

Whew, glad at least some of you don't have these games covered. I also realized that quite a few of these games are pretty long RPGs. paulofthewest: I think either DW3 or DW4 is a fine choice - you don't have to have DW3 under your belt to enjoy DW4, although if you want to roll with DW3 first, I won't object.

I also realized that quite a few of these games are pretty long RPGs. According to HLTB for the three I was looking at: Crystalis = ~10 hours Ganbare Goemon 3 = 8 hours Shining Force 2 = 30 hours Yeah maybe not SF2 right now, I'm already playing ME3 and still want to finish FFL2.

Ha, guess whose time that was for Goemon 3!
(Spoiler alert: it was mine. 8h15m is what I plugged in. I saw others that had beaten it but didn't record a time. I finished on the SNES Classic, so I had an excellent way to keep an accurate gauge of how long I'd played, since I just kept the save state updated.)

Is this checklist for getting the best ending in Valkyrie Profile good? If there's a better option let me know!
EDIT: I kind of just maybe don't want to bother at all and play it naturally. Then I could just watch the extra ending on YT. But it sounds like I'll miss a lot of playable content? Ehhhhh...
