At the time of writing we have a "Now Playing" and a "Retro Games Beaten" topic, but no topic for the future tense. So under Ex's encouragement I am making one. Everybody can post stuff you intend to play in the near term here. When I'm through with Descent for PC I intend to play this: I have vivid childhood memories of playing Quake's shareware version when it was a state of the art PC game. I have since beaten all episodes of the retail version, but I've never dabbled in any of its expansions. If everything goes according to plan I'll set that straight soon.

Definitely a thread we could use. I'm not sure what I'm going to play next, but it will probably be something else from Club Retro, even if it ends up being a repeat for me. I've already enjoyed revisiting some games to see how well they hold up. Actually, I think I might shift to Yoshi's Island. I've got a half-completed replay on the SNES Classic, so it might make for a good nightcap.

I keep multiple lists of games I want to play. I always have Club Retro lists for the given year, but I won't share those because it's funner to surprise in that regard. The most pertinent list that matters, would be the "Top 10" games I want to play in a given year.
This is 2021's:
Bahamut Lagoon Busou Shinki Battle Masters Dark Souls Dishonored Dragon Quest II Landstalker Mass Effect 3 (I have begun playing this one.) Omega Boost Record Of Lodoss War - Deedlit In Wonder Labyrinth Uncharted 2
It's nearly mid-June and I've failed greatly thus far to accomplish this list. Gotta play harder!

Some good stuff on that list. I liked Landstalker a lot, and didn't mind the platforming, but something tells me it'll piss you off. I wonder whether you'll take to the game overall. It's very puzzle-intensive. A lot of those puzzles play out more like trials, where they're easy to figure out, but harder to execute. You certainly need to be patient enough to get comfortable with isometric controls (though I know you've played isometric games before). I never minded getting used to control schemes - I don't even mind tank controls in old survival horror games - but that seems rare these days. Anyway, we'll know when you do play it.

I think there's only really one particular puzzle that was infuriating, given how tight the timing is, but outside of that, I think most stuff is quite doable. I was impressed by the scope of the game - it was a lot meatier than I'd expected going in.
It does share DNA with Alundra, though. Matrix Software was formed from former Climax Entertainment (and apparently Telenet Japan) folks.

Some good stuff on that list. I liked Landstalker a lot, and didn't mind the platforming, but something tells me it'll piss you off. It may piss me off. I was getting rather irritated at some of Beyond Oasis' platforming last night, which is sort of in the same visual vein as what we're talking about with Landstalker. It's true that doing true isometric platforming well (as a developer I mean) is tricky business. I've never had issues with tank controls. I used to beat crusty PC games using tank controls on keyboard, let alone a controller. I can't remember a time when I've stopped playing a game due to its controls alone.
It does share DNA with Alundra, though.
That concerns me some. There was a timed jumping puzzle in Alundra involving pillars, candles, and dripping water (IIRC) that super aggravated me. I beat that puzzle, but I never did beat Alundra. I'm willing to give Alundra a second chance though, now that it can be played via an Un-Worked Designs patch.
My interest in Landstalker stems from a growing interest in playing more retro action-RPGs in general. I've beaten quite a few of them, but there's plenty I've not played yet. Landstalker is simply one of the more prominent entries I've never given an honest try to (yet). In my older years I can appreciate the immediacy that action-RPGs bring, versus a long slog of high encounter turn-based battling. (Though at times, I can still be in the mood for that stuff.)

So what does everyone have on tap for the weekend?
Not sure what I'll be playing retro - pretty busy weekend with Father's Day, but I may look at sliding in some Yoshi's Island or SaGa Frontier Remastered. (The latter straddles the new/old line.)

Continue DW4 for sure (I'm in chapter 3.) I'm considering introducing my children to Metal Slug. I have the anthology for Wii and remember it being a blast. Okay, that pun was intended.
