Title: Running HighPlatform: PlayStation Region release played: Japan Year of release: 1997 Developer: System Sacom Publisher: Rex Entertainment Graphics: 3/5 Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 4/5 Fun factor: 2/5 Quick Thoughts: Running High is a Japanese only futuristic on-foot racing game. Players control cybernetic athletes that race through metropolis laden courses, while techno music blasts. The pace is quick and the graphics flow smoothly, giving a nice sense of speed. However, the controls are obtuse and the actual racing mechanics asinine, so the fun factor remains low. Most of this game is in English, despite never releasing outside of Japan, so it's not hard for a westerner to get into. +Fairly unique racing concept. +The OST is good. +Consistent aesthetics. +You can punch other racers. +When your slide is working properly, it's fun to corner with. -Controls are too convoluted for a racer. -It shouldn't be this hard to NOT run into walls. -The AI can defy physics in ways the player can't. -Unlocking all the courses is a tedious, fairly torturous affair. -Slow loading screens work against the game's pacing. Ex's time to beat: 45 minutes Ex's rating: 5/10

I wanted to get at least one game in for completion... and the original masterpiece F-Zero wasn't on my HLTB list, so always the best excuse for a replay!
Took about 58 minutes, standard on all three cups.
Standard has more bite than I remember or give it credit for. X and GX don't mess around but the original is tough too. It's almost hilarious how easily the CPU "cheats". I still don't know if the main three you're racing against can officially die from a bad ramp landing. They rubber band around corners and dodge all the drones like nothing. I love how some of those exploding drones will just be sitting on the track sometimes not moving. Hope you don't hit them.. But yeah this game rules and I still managed to get first in most tracks.
I still tend to think White Land 1 is one of the toughest levels. I forgot about the annoying wind blowing gimmick on the Death Wind's. Death Wind 2 was brutal. Fire Field is pretty tough since it's a huge track and the shield repair is off course like a real pit stop. So you have to be a little strategic on going through there or not.
Definitely one of the best SNES OST's ever. Love how Mega Man-ish the tunes are. Of course.
Some SUPER close calls. For the one on the right in Fire Field notice my health. lol
Is Ex a Master at this one?

Is Ex a Master at this one? The base game? Oh yeah. Earlier this month I beat a much more difficult hack though, considerably tougher than the original courses. I haven't beat Nebula Highway yet, however. That's the toughest hack I've tried so far.

that looks like a nightmare. Yeah I wouldn't call that particular hack "well balanced".
- Doesn't look like I'll be playing any more racing games for this month, so here's what I beat:Battle Cars (SNES) 7/10 Chocobo Racing (PS1) 6/10 F-Zero - Nytezero tracks hack (SNES) 7/10 (rating based on hack, not F-Zero) Konami Krazy Racers (GBA) 8/10 Running High (PS1) 5/10

Probably it for me, too - I've had time but haven't gotten a lot of big gaming time in. I did sample a fair number of racers, though, even if I didn't stick with them all.
The beaten ones:
