Jewel Master is definitely worth playing. I plan to finally beat it in August. I have a long history with that game. I know toei is a fan of Mystic Defender. I would just emulate Skies of Arcadia Legends via Dolphin and Blood Will Tell via PCSX2 (or mod your dang PS2 so you can play ISOs.) The Valkyria Chronicles series are the best modern-era SRPGs that I've played, just outstanding. Although "modern", because the first two games in the series are now HRG compliant. Seriously, if you only play through one new-to-you Sega game this month, Valkyria Chronicles is my vote.

I know Dimps was involved in a couple of them at minimum, but as far as I can tell, Sonic Team was also involved in all three.
Still wish I'd never returned that semi-scratched copy of Blood Will Tell. Gah, so expensive.

Man... you don't even want to get me started on seller's regret. I could make a mint selling off the PS2 games I sold back in 2008, if I were to sell them today. Never would have imagined the prices would be like they are now.

The retro market right now is nuts. It sucks for people like me that still wanted to chip away at the edges. Not many edges to chip at this point, even with recent systems. I mean, for crying out loud, I see Switch/PS4 releases going for sky-high dollar values.

A couple of my Game Gear favorites to add to the pile:
- GG Shinobi / Shinobi II - Sylvan Tale - Kishin Douji Zenki - Defenders of Oasis
I recommend sticking with the SMS for the Illusion games or Master of Darkness, which are also fun.

Ex I'm a fan of the first three you recommended, even. Well, E-SWAT isn't quite as good as Mystic Defender or Jewel Master, but it's still pretty good. Alien Storm is pretty mediocre, though the presentation is pretty cool. I just don't think the weapons made sense for beat-'em-up gameplay. They're basically short-range guns that act like regular punches and kicks... it's weird. I don't know what I'll go with yet, myself. Sega is easily my favorite developer, though, so I'll find something. I'll probably see if my computer can emulate Blood Will Tell / Dororo without slowdowns. I actually read the original '60s manga, it's good. If I'd bought a PS4, I'd play a Yakuza game.

I see Switch/PS4 releases going for sky-high dollar values. Indeed. I've paid a few exorbitant prices already, 'cause wants what I want. But overall concerning physical media: If I'd bought a PS4, I'd play a Yakuza game. Well I don't think any of the PS4 entries are compliant for Club Retro. That said, if you can emulate PS2, I recommend these: I've beaten both, they were excellent. I also recommend them to Sarge, or anybody else who enjoys beat 'em up/RPG hybrids. The PS4 has a remaster collection which also includes the PS3 entries. Yakuza 3 & 4 are both compliant. Dead Souls is if you by the Japanese release date, but not by the US date.
I did play through the first two already.

Okay, so you were inferring to essentially play PS3 entries on the PS4, I get it now. Glad to see someone else besides Xeogred and me played the first two on PS2. Obviously you enjoyed them, considering you want to play more. I do as well, eventually...

To clarify I've only played the Kiwami versions of 1-2. Yakuza 3 was my first one and a very bizarre jumping in point. I wasn't sure if I'd like them and don't know why I started there but I did.
Kiwami 1 is on 3-5/0's engine, then Kiwami 2 is on 6's engine. I think Kiwami 2 replaced the voice actress for the main female cop for some reason. Either way, Kiwami 2 is up there with Zero for my top two favorites in the series so far.
I still need to play 5, but that one is too new. I have the PS4 remaster. I own the entire series on PS4 actually.
4 has multiple new playable characters. So for someone else playing them in the correct order that might be something to look forward to. I definitely liked that one more than 3.
