Yes Battlezone is outstanding. I should get around to this someday sooner: And yep, I have beaten every game in my list above. If I have a weak spot in strategy gaming, it's the late '90s early '00s PC RTS stuff. There are SO many PC RTS games from that time period. My only issue there is the ones I'm interested in are all 30+ hours long. Not looking to sink that much time into a CR game right now.

I put an hour into the 2008 DS RTS Blue Dragon Plus tonight. It's a direct sequel to the original Xbox 360 JRPG, so I was a bit lost on some of the plot beats. I got the gist well enough though. Gameplay-wise this is quite a bit different than Heroes of Mana or Revenant Wings. Unlike those two, this isn't the kind of RTS where you gather resources and construct units to wipe out the opposition. Rather this is kind of like an RTS / beat 'em up hybrid (so far). With a whole lot of plot exposition punctuating each mission. I like what I've seen/played up till now, but I get a sense of where problems may arise. So at this point I'm "cautiously intrigued". I must say the OST has been frickin' great though. Edit: Also I realized today that this is from 2011: For some reason I had it in my head that Valkyria Chronicles 3 was from 2013. That means VC3 is HRG compliant and works for this theme. I may very well resurrect my play of it this month then, considering I stalled out a good 1/3rd of the way through. VC3 is the longest entry in the franchise by far. According to HLTB for "main story" only: VC1 = 30 hours VC2 = 38 hours VC3 = 58 hours VC4 = 36 hours

So, because it's the only way I've found to motivate myself to play games recently, I am going to announce the game I'd like to try for this month's theme: Majin Tensei 2, a SRPG Megami Tensei spin-off on the SNES that was translated a couple years ago. The first game received a fan-translation, too, but it has a bad reputation; after a quick search, it seems no one likes it. Back in the day, that wouldn't have deterred me. Maybe it is good, and just misunderstood, or maybe it's not good, but also not that bad. I'm not willing to bet 10 hours on in anymore, or however long it would take to be sure. The apparent consensus (and it's fragile, as it really just amounts to a handful of reviews or comments) is that Majin Tensei 2 is much improved, and the story is self-contained, so...

Rhapsody is a like a 6/10 game. Cute little distraction and weird late-90s relic. It does get tedious; thankfully it wraps up relatively quickly.

Definitely looks cool at a glance. I'll be anticipating an update on this one.

I've played a bit of it, and it's definitely a slick-looking (and sounding!) SRPG. And I even imported a boxed copy, although the expansion sound doesn't work because I haven't wired it up in my cart adapter. (You have to do an internal mod and connect up the pins if the converter doesn't have them connected.)

I'm eying Just Breed on the Famicom. Anyone played the game? Yup, I played through it back when I was a RPG-playing machine. I really liked it. It's one of a handful of late-NES games that feel more 16-bit than 8-bit. The obvious comparison is Shining Force, because you have towns to explore in between battles, but the gameplay also has elements from the Langrisser series (aka Warsong), where your main characters are commanders that have disposable troops with them. It came out after both, despite being a NES game (it's more likely that the inspirations were Fire Emblem and Langrisser, though, based on the release dates). Oh yeah, and that cover art was definitely drawn by the 3X3 Eyes guy. I guess he designed the characters, though it doesn't change much in-game.

Sounds good - will probably get around to playing the game this weekend. Love the box art as well (though I enjoy most of the artwork on (Super) Famicom boxes).

Just hoppin' in to say I enjoy Just Breed as well.
And yeah, the box art is cool but so's the cart itself. It's a Famicom cart that looks like it was kinda modeled to look like an NES cart with "ridges" running vertically.
Just Breed...... Just Play It!!
