The gamma trick definitely helps a ton. Just a few points makes a big difference, without ruining the rest of the colors. Good stuff. (7 / 17) missions in the tank!
So far the main environments have been:
- Venice - Some underwater industrial human base - Undersea wreckage (where I'm at now)
The enemies have been:
- Rats - Dogs - Humans
It's definitely different than TR1's aesthetic. But I'm still having a great time overall.
It's always fun to find old "realism" in early 3D games. In Doom wads nowadays some people call it "DoomCute". Stuff like this table of cups/cards, or these crazy beds.

Is it an effect of the emulator/up-res or does Lara look really skinny in these shots?

The camera pans out a bit when you draw your guns. I can see how it looks a little extra vertical, but I think it's just the perspective looking funky in some spots. Looks fine to me while playing the game. The aspect ratio is set to Auto, but I do have 5x 1080p on and my screenshots save as huge images, so that up-res might be making it look a little weird in ways. Does make me wonder if the aspect ratio was tweaked a bit for the PS1 version. It wouldn't be the first time. Doesn't look bad to me though.

Might just be that without chunky pixels, it makes her look a ton smoother and skinnier. Also wondering if DuckStation has some sort of widescreen mode?

Yeah I think that's it. With me playing at 5x resolution, it's maybe looking TOO sharp in spots and those polygons are looking edgy haha.
I'm actually on a 1440p screen too though. I put the resolution to 6x while playing some of Shadow Tower, but it made pillars in one room disappear. So any higher than 1080p might start breaking things. Maybe I could bump it down to 720p and see if Lara looks a bit more normal, but I don't mind it as is for now.
There is a Widescreen Hack option in Enhancement Settings.

Don't sweat it, it's not like I'm the best judge of what Tomb Raider is supposed to look like, ha!

It definitely has a certain look to it, no doubt.
The old TR style makes me think of those weird 3rd person Duke Nukem games. I had a friend who had one or both of them and they were pretty cool. Emulated one of them a little bit awhile back. Maybe I'll give it a real look later this month.

I agree those PS1 shots of TR2 look wonky. DuckStation does have a lot of aspect ratio presets: I advise messing with them until it looks right.

4:3 is like 5% better.
My screenshots come out at 1493 x 1120 for whatever reason, that and it looking better while I play on my end, halfway into this game now, oh well.
You guys never thought my other Duckstation screenshots seemed off. And now that I see the aspect ratio is different per game, I think that's proof to some of the comments in that thread I linked... seems like PSX games themselves would randomly mess with the ratio so it's a weird potential difference game to game.
At least I'm not a monster that plays everything at a stretched 16:9.

I think playing PSX games at that high of a resolution is way worse than playing them at 16:9, aesthetically. I'm not difficult when it comes to aspect ratios, but high-res PS1 is just disgusting to me. It makes the textures on the polygons look pasted-on (which they are, but you shouldn't be able to see that), which makes every character look like when the aliens wear a human's skin over their body in Men in Black. As for screenshots, there's an option in Duckstation to output them in their native resolution and without filters, regardless of how you're playing them. Also, opinion-sharing aside, whatever looks and feels best to you is what you should go with. People telling me I can't stretch my screen or I should use big dumb obvious scanlines that look nothing like playing on a CRT TV did get on my nerves, so I won't do that to others.
