Keep thinking about Treasure of the Rudras again. Was that really Square's last game on the SNES? Or last RPG. Wasn't it most of the SaGa staff that worked on it?

Last game developed for SNES = Treasure of the RudrasLast game published on SNES = Treasure Hunter GLast RPG made (developed and published by Square) = Final Fantasy X-2I haven't forgotten about this theme. I plan to play, and possibly finish, at least four games for it. Plenty of stuff I'm interested in.

Wasn't it most of the SaGa staff that worked on it?I keep having to dispel this myth on this board, lol. Rudras was made by Square Osaka, the same team that made FF Legend 3 and Mystic Quest. This was their first big project for Square. Previously, the main staff worked for a pioneer of the Japanese computer RPG scene called XTALSOFT, which had business ties with Square in the '80s. In 1990 it merged with T&E Soft; part of the staff became T&E Soft Osaka, while the rest joined Square to become Square Osaka. The SaGa guy was just some kind of supervising producer. Rudras doesn't feel like a SaGa game at all, it's actually polished, well-thought out and has a proper story.

I haven't forgotten, toei! I even remember remarking how impressive it was that the SaGa 3/FFMQ team produced such a great game.

Square Osaka was an internal team, even if it has its roots in another company. I was addressing the whole "SaGa team" thing. You're right about release dates. They released these two pretty close to one another, then Tobal a few months later, and went all in on the Playstation. They pulled clean out of the Nintendo business just a month before the N64 came out, and wouldn't release anything on a Nintendo platform for about 6 years, until the Gameboy Advance. They even supported the Wonderswan rather than the Gameboy Color. I know they decided to bet on the PSX because of the CD-ROM VS cartridges thing, but this makes me think there's more to it. Sarge I always liked Mystic Quest, so I think it's cool they got to make what is basically a AAA RPG at the end of the SNES's life (probably the best timing for quality, if not for sales).

My in game timer tells me I'm about 14 hours into FF7. I just recently got the keystone from Dio at the Golden Saucer. Here are some random thoughts:
- FF7's CGI backgrounds are very charming in 2022. It reminds me the days when Myst was head-explodingly cool, or of Donkey Kong Country 2, which I was playing very recently. I really wish they had held onto the source files used to render them so the background artwork wasn't eternally stuck in 240P resolution. It would just be neat to see what they were trying to depict with more clarity.
- Growing up, I knew about FF7, I just had an N64 instead of a Playstation, so I never played it for myself. The early 2000's Internet was full of FF7 fan art and memes. Other gamers I knew irl talked about FF7 like it was a life-changing masterpiece. I'm not sure how to reconcile these expectations with how FF7 is hitting me now. This is a very cute, quirky game with a lot of spirit and enthusiasm. But it's also meandering and self-indulgent. FF7 is somewhat of a paradox because at times it pushes the technical boundaries of its day, yet at the end of the day it's way too conservative to iterate on the JRPG song and dance that's been around since the 8-bit days.
- I was begrudgingly tolerating FF7 until about hour 12. That's because random encounters or turn-based combat simply don't appeal to me. Then around hour 12 something clicked and I began to derive some ritualistic gratification from it, like popping bubble wrap. It doesn't make me want to pursue more experiences like FF7 but at least I'm getting more insight into what FF7 is like.

Yeah. Square were a technical powerhouse around the mid 90's and on. They surely liked to show it too. To deny that FF7 is a technical marvel for its time would be crazy, but I can probably see how older FF fans might have thought they were focusing more on "flair" than "substance". Again, I can say this as someone that loves FF7, but it's a wacky game with flaws. I think I somehow slipped into the middle of the two older FF fanbases. It's easy to see how FF7 probably catered more towards younger people at the time (I had a friend bring the case to grade school just to show off the manual and stuff haha) and more often than not, I see older gamers who were into the first three in the US weren't too hot on FF7. I just devoured 16/32bit JRPG's all at once when I got into that stuff though, so I like them all.
I think you probably just did some of the worst parts of it to me, around the Gold Saucer bits. But I like that stuff with Barret's old friend Dyne (?) if you did that stuff. The pacing and quality of the game has its ups and downs, but for me the peaks make it enduring and a fun adventure overall. Maybe you'll have a little more fun with it from here on. Also, if you looked into the menu's, you can turn the battle speed up... I'd max that out. I think I usually make the battle camera static too. The weird dynamic camera option they tried with it is more annoying than not to me. It might be the 16bit JRPG fan in me, but I like a simple one camera shot of battles in turn based stuff and that's cool enough to me. But dynamic mode in FF7 was more of them trying to show off the tech I'm sure. Battles will start flowing a bit quicker if you haven't done this yet. Plus, it's not like FF7 is hard either. You'll be overpowered at some point with crazy weapons and Materia, etc. Are you keeping an Enemy Skill or two around? I had three with tons of abilities on my most recent replay and man, those spells make it extra easy mode, lol. White Wind, etc... I never liked Aerith growing up. But I like her a lot thanks to the remake now. And yeah, they went with "Aerith" instead of the original localized "Aeris", so I'm still trying to get used to it. lol I'm not sure what I'll hit up for this month so far. ActRaiser 2 still seems like a good choice. With next month being PS1 JRPG's and my own personal plans for some big games this year, not sure what I'll do. So shorter games seem ideal. But that's a little trickier with Square / Enix.
