Sheesh, Assault on the Control Room is too long a mission. Should have ended a good fifteen minutes ago at a minimum. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Level 7: The Library. - I made it to mission 16 in DMC1 last night. I very much enjoyed swimming around in the pirate ship, that was not expected. At this point I've got about 4 hours in the game. I've read there are 23 missions, so I'm well over halfway at this point. I'm sure it's going to get harder and harder though, no doubt. I do enjoy the mission structure, keeps the pacing tighter. I didn't enjoy fighting the lightning bird boss three times. This game needs more variety to the bosses. But still the exploration is fun and I keep being impressed with the environment designs.

While the game certainly is hard, I feel like the early bits and some of the later bits are the really challenging parts. Once you start getting those initial upgrades and abilities, it smooths out some. You're always on your toes, though, no doubt.

You certainly have to carefully weigh every upgrade purchase. I try not to buy consumable items at all as a result. Thankfully ammo is unlimited.

Alright, finished a game for the theme finally: Title: Devil May Cry HD Collection: Devil May CryPlatform: Xbox 360 (originally PS2) Region release played: USA Year of release: 2012 (originally 2001) Developer: Capcom Publisher: Capcom Graphics: 4/5 (regarding the PS2 version in its day) Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 4/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Quick Thoughts: DMC is an action-adventure (slash 'em up really) that originally released for PS2 in 2001. It is notable for creating the "character action" genre. With is stylish aesthetic and wickedly fast melee combat, DMC was quite a shocker back when third person action games tended to move slowly and clumsily. DMC's humorous anti-hero Dante became a popular video game icon in his own right. Despite being kinda rough around the edges and harboring daunting difficulty, it's no mystery why the original DMC spawned a franchise. +Fluid and fast third person melee combat. +Outstanding gothic visual design for the environments. +The OST is occasionally frantic and invigorating. +I enjoyed the first person swimming parts, non-sequitur as they are. +The third person rail-shooter boss fight. -No auto-fire for guns unless you play Easy mode. -The fixed camera angles cause serious gameplay issues occasionally. -Fighting the same bosses over and over (and over). -Even regular enemies can take ludicrous amounts of damage. -The difficulty can be high in BS ways. Ex's time to beat: 6 hours 33 minutes
Ex's rating: 7.5/10
Overall I liked DMC1 enough to continue with the series. I may play DMC2 this summer.

Glad you liked it. I actually think it would be humorous if you jumped into DMC2 ASAP to sample it. You'll be scratching your head over the differences. Hopefully DMC2 has auto-fire, I can't remember. Because all you need are your pistols for 90% of it.
Either way, the DMC's should only run about a dozen hours per game or so.
Worth pointing out that DMC1, was still somewhat born from RE4 (also like Haunting Ground). I wonder if there was no fixing some of the camerawork and level design after a point with what they had to work with. These things are definitely less of a problem with DMC3 thankfully.
It's kind of funny how Dante and the story is so bad it's good too. But it's DMC3 where he turns into a pizza loving TMNT styled goofball, in a fun way to me. So the tone perhaps gets a little lighter with the Itsuno games. But yeah, I think you'll really like DMC3.

I actually think it would be humorous if you jumped into DMC2 ASAP to sample it. From what I've read DMC2 had a troubled development. I understand why Kamiya wasn't involved, but none of the original Little Devils team were either apparently. It was like a hush hush project in a secret studio of Capcom's or something. I can only surmise the reason is because Capcom had polls where people reported what they didn't and did like about DMC1 (that factually happened). So Capcom decided to make DMC2 highly influenced by those polls, and didn't want to fight with the original creators to implement the changes into the sequel. But then the new team were struggling to make something worth a damn, and Capcom threw Itsuno at the project to try to salvage it. Except they only gave him a few months to do so. I guess he redeemed himself with DMC3. I read that DMC2 has a weapon-change button, without needing to go into the inventory screen, so that's an improvement at least. I'll check DMC2 out this year, probably play as Lucia. It was like whoever was setting up the camera angles for the environments, was never in communication with who was populating the environments with enemies. I just want to know where the airplane came from. You know at the end when the plane falls from the ceiling out of nowhere, and Dante and Trish fly away from the exploding island. That was beyond deus ex machina. Anyway this will be my sole contribution to this particular theme. Looking forward to Sarge's final take on Halo. And if Xeogred plays through KF4. And whatever else whoever else is playing?

Can you re-confirm any stories about Kamiya not knowing DMC2 existed until he read about it on a train? I've always heard that legend. Everything else you said adds up. Itsuno had a strong background in fighting games, so to me that kind of makes perfect since why the combat in DMC3-5 is immaculate. It's got the depth and unlimited skill ceiling like a fighting game, but purely for PvE in an awesome way. And yeah, glad you read right, he doesn't deserve any blame for the mess around DMC2.
Refresh me, did you play any of the Onimusha's?
I'm afraid I won't get to KF4 right now. Got a long weekend ahead to relax, but life's been crazy with other stuff lately. Just glad I'm at the final dungeon(s) in Digital Devil Saga 2 now.

Ex Capcom being run like a bad marriage, sneaking around behind its game designers back to avoid confrontation.

DMC2 isn't a bad game, just a disappointment. It tries to be more serious, and the lack of challenge hurts it in a lot of ways. I still think it's good, but it's nowhere near the level of the first game or what came after, even the much-maligned DmC.
