I'm getting warm fuzzies from playing through a few years ago. Glad you're enjoying it, Xeogred.

I'll keep the screenshots/journal going.
Some early ones. The first room there is one of the first big rooms you enter in general, that's not a normal house/cave. Impressive lighting and atmosphere oozing from that scene.
Something is up with this old man... seen him in two spots now. He even once said "Who am I? That's not important" or something. Also keep wondering if I can do something with those Fire Stone statues...
And this is where I'm at now. Just got the Expeditioner's Key. The golems are scary as heck, guess there's no hurting these ones... yet? Now I'm fighting lizard kights and stuff.
The tower with the circular bridges almost feels like a King's Field + Shadow Tower area fused into one. Prior to that, definitely got some KF1-KF2 vibes leading up into this temple area as well. I guess it's not surprising this feels like the ultimate combination of all the games (even though I think Shadow Tower Abyss came out later).
Sure helps having played all the others. Like would anyone normally think to check each and every grave? You learn that immediately from KF1/KF2 haha, so I always check them all.

I'm getting warm fuzzies from playing through a few years ago. I do hope you play through KF3 before hanging up your interest in the series. KF3 felt the most Zelda influenced to me. It has a big overworld with portals into various dungeons. The golems are scary as heck Yep, they're like a Dark Souls situation long before Dark Souls. >The tower with the circular bridges That was one of my favorite areas. Also a good place to use a bow due to the flying enemies. >I think Shadow Tower Abyss came out later Yeah ST:A released after KF4. As far as I know, ST:A was FromSoftware's final first person dungeon crawler. >Like would anyone normally think to check each and every grave? I did, but I also took my time immensely with KF4. I put 33 hours into finishing KF4, whereas HLTB says the majority put 23. That was due to two things; I checked every nook and cranny thoroughly, didn't want to miss a single hidden treasure or optional area. And also because I loved KF4's melancholy world and didn't want to leave it. You are making good progress, but I'll reiterate; take it slow man. KF4 is a truly rare treat, savor it!

Just played for like 5 hours straight I think.
I'm at some ice dungeon now. Got 3 colored stones/wands that I can use to warp around some. But I kind of backtracked through the entire game today too, to find a dang locked "Priest's Door" that I jotted down but took forever to rediscover. I also thought the first merchant Doug had some map, but I do have a Caretaker's map that's just one little dungeon. Another NPC I met with a huge spear within the tower area talked about a map of the city, so I think that's my current quest. I liked how it was quicker to get a map in KF3 and easier to teleport around, but my Shadow Tower training prepared me to go through 10 some hours of this game already with no main map so far.
There was an Expeditioners Chest at the very beginning of the game too, so I grabbed that. And I STILL can't get this one weird item that's on a ledge with nothing around it... seriously makes me wonder if you can jump, fly, or get telekinesis at some point. Also found a magic shard in between a bunch of rocks in the ice dungeon, but a war hammer/pickaxe didn't do anything to those rocks.

It's pretty remarkable how good the game looks today. Excellent use of the PS2 hardware. (I played through on real hardware and not upscaled and still thought it looked great.)

Yeah, this is all native resolution too. I have Anisotropic 8x on that might boost the lighting a tad, but nothing else too fancy on.

Excellent use of the PS2 hardware. Yep and KF4 released in 2001 (in Japan) barely a year after the PS2 released. So it was an early gen game too. FromSoftware have always been gods among men.

The seamless no loading still amazes me. Even more than that, across every KF/ST game if an enemy drops gold or an item and you miss it/don't pick it up, it stays there forever in my experience. So I'll backtrack through half the game and occasionally see some coins or something I missed from a drop. That's insane.
I wonder if there's a memory flush/reset when you teleport but I don't know.
Their immaculate skills remain to this day. FromSoftware are prodigies.

I've played Dr. Hauzer for about an hour. I was hoping for a primitive Resident Evil, but it's not like that at all. It's a straight up adventure game with no action. All you really do is examine rooms looking for items that let you advance, mostly keys, and solve little puzzles. The lack of action makes the adventure component monotonous, especially when the game moves so slowly (just a handful of frames per second). You do find diary entries. Looks like it's going to be a very predictable story. There are also tons of instant deaths, especially in the first few minutes, which is just annoying rather than scary. That hour felt a lot longer. I know the game is supposed to be two, three hours at most... I don't know if I'll finish it. RE feels revolutionary in comparison. I wonder if this is what Alone in the Dark is like.
