Darn skippy. The roster updates are always fun because it's neat to see what the authors think of the current crop of players. Ha! Shoulda known you already knew about this one. I actually have repro carts of Crimson Echoes That's interesting, does it contain a complete version of Crimson Echoes? Did Crimson Echoes get finished insofar as playable from A to Z?

I've always heard pretty decent things about the Parallel Worlds hack of Link to the Past, but it's also notable for being very, very difficult. I see it a ton in the repro cart world, so I guess some folks want it. www.romhacking.net/hacks/197/

I love Doom. I think I played it the very year it came out at age 3, when is just as amazing as it is messed up (holy crap, a toddler had the hand to eye coordination to play this) (holy crap, you let your toddler play Doom?!). Anyway, it's the reason I love old FPS's inspired by Doom. I love the macabre, dark themes, the violence, the lock and key puzzles, the labyrinthine maps, even the cardboard cutout-looking enemies. A year or two ago I researched all the best Doom mods and downloaded them to play later. Here's what's inside of the "doom mods" folder I created. (I don't know anything about these except for the title and screenshot, since I still haven't installed or played any of them): Brutal Doom The Island kdizd Pirate Doom Project Brutality Reelism Stronghold Unloved Winter's Fury Zendyn

DOOM mods were super huge in the 90s. Even I made a few custom WADs myself. IIRC id provided some good community tools for doing so.

Oh, forgot about this one: FS2Open. It's an open-source project that builds on the FreeSpace 2 engine. There are a ton of mods for it, as well, some of which are regarded as better than the base campaign. You can also play the original FreeSpace in the FS2 engine, which is awfully cool.

Yes, Crimson Echoes can be beaten. Apparently it's also very hard, which is a huge beef I have with a bunch of these hacks.
A couple of retro game stores near me seem to be making good money selling these hacks as physical repro carts. They charge $40 a pop (mainly SNES).

No worries, I was 5 when I was exposed to Doom haha. My friend never let me play though... but I've said it elsewhere, it's become probably my #3 overtime after Link to the Past and Super Metroid. The amount of high quality megawads out there by this point is insane. Doom was already perfect but the addition of its everlasting fan community pumping out megawads that are arguably even better than the original games keeps it fresh and interesting to this day. I don't like Doom mods much though. I think the aesthetics of Doom are perfect as is... however I finally gave one a shot last year and it was Complex Doom. It's a little comparable to Brutal Doom, but feels more authentic to the original experience. It randomizes the enemies in ways and the roster is like quadrupled with a lot of new enemies. This makes it unique no matter how many times you have to replay a level, because the enemies and placement can change. Along with weapon drops and there's some weapon changes and more, like there's the shotgun, double barrel, auto combat shotgun, quad barrel, and even a hexa barrel (watch out, these rare Marines that have them can one shot you easily haha). There's also some new items you can get, like mines, or grenades, and then manually used health/armor and ammo packs. You'd think that's cheap, but it's not at all with all the new enemies and weapons. I keep playing it and really do enjoy this mod. Easy to use with OG Doom and Doom 2 as well to spice those up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekWtAe0bNSUwww.moddb.com/mods/complex-doomI like gzdoom. No mouselook or jumping allowed for me! The MegaWads I've played over the years, bolding my favorites: Alien Vendetta Valiant Community Chest Pack 4
Ancient Aliens Community Chest Pack 1-3 Memento Mori 1-2 Scythe 1-2 Hell Revealed 1-2 Vanguard Claustrophobia 1024 Doom the Way Id Did 1-2

I feel like at this point I've managed to bring up Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic on WAY too many separate threads, but the Restored Content Mod is really kind of a feat so I'll name check it again. Here's an interview with one of the Modders.

Interesting picks Ziggy! Are there other good DKC hacks out there? My searches haven't led to much. chibby: Does it elaborate on the ending at all or anything? But yeah, I mentioned it the other thread, once I replay the PC version I'll be playing with that mod.
