Figured we could use this thread, with the random thread being a bit more for off the wall discussions, this is more specific.
Still on my SNES kick, I just got to the 5th ghost world in DKC2 in about 2 hours or so. I'll probably wrap that up again in another session haha. I haven't bothered doing 100% for ages and probably won't again, but I have 45 bonus coins so far so I'll check out some of the lost world levels for fun as I usually do.
Overall, I still like DKC1 way more. It's just always been a case of less is more to me. There's a lot to love about DKC1's simplicity. I also think it's all about the aesthetics. In DKC2-3, there are a few levels and themes I don't care for, or some that blend in a bit too much. But I absolutely love the look of every single area in DKC1 and the game has far more lush, bright, sun layered levels that's just awesome to look at. DKC2 is this drab and murky darker world with lots of muted colors and it never really changes. Fittingly so for K Rool's island and all... but yeah. Just another big reason why I like DKC1 more.
Huge fan of DKC3 but everytime I try to marathon all three together, I burn out super hard in DKC3 haha. So I'm just planning on getting through DKC2 again right now.

Been distracted a bit lately, but mostly working on more SNES games, although I've also been fiddling with my old PlayStation as well. I played some DKC3 as well, it's the only one I haven't finished at this point. I probably should do that. Speaking of DKC, I highly recommend the DF Retro episode on the topic. Good stuff. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ7qtqqgTlo

Mostly I've been playing retro licensed platformers for RB's thread. (Also still working on finishing a mediocre Wii U game.) I tried various licensed platformers last night, a few I tried that I won't be finishing:Sunsoft's 1990 Genesis' Batman. Not good, 5/10 material. Hard to believe the same company that made the amazing Batman on NES a few years earlier made this version on Genesis. Fushigi no Yume no Alice for TurboGrafx-16... 6/10-ish. Kinda cute, but bland overall, nothing great here. If you really love Alice in Wonderland, take a look. Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition on Genesis. 4/10 if you ask me. Bad graphics, annoying gameplay, didn't like it. Jurassic Park II on SNES. Maybe 6/10. Better than the Genesis version, still kinda crap. Sunsoft's Speedy Gonzales: Aztec Adventure on GBC... perhaps 6/10. Seemed kind of Sonic inspired, but Speedy's jumping physics were way too floaty for my taste. Seemed decent enough, good game for a six year old. Another Sunsoft jam; Daffy Duck on Game Boy. This one might be a 7/10, it seemed fairly decent from the five minutes I played it. I may go back and beat this one if some of the other ideas for the TR don't pan out.

I remember reading a lot of praise for the Genesis Batman back in the day, but after trying it I just couldn't understand it. I never really enjoyed it much, and the followup, Batman Returns, also felt weird to me. Honestly, even if it is pretty simple, the SNES Batman Returns beat-'em-up feels really good to play, and even the NES version has that sort of TMNT II vibe going that works for the system.

What's wrong with Jurassic Park 2? It's Jurassic Park Contra haha. Always dug that one and co-op is great. The only thing I dislike is the really weird non-linearity to the level selection and I think there's short or long routes to the ending. It's convoluted for no good reason. The OST is really killer. The first SNES Jurassic Park game is about as bizarre as it gets. Bird's eye view Zelda styled adventure, but then with first person dungeons for the installations and bases. I don't think there's any password or saving whatsoever when the game desperately needed it. I think in the 20 plus some years I've played it off and on I've never once finished it completely and I've been wanting to remedy that. Despite what some others might say, I don't like the Genesis games at all. Awful and weird level design, hit detection, etc. Sarge : How far have you gotten in DKC3? I think the back half is a lot stronger than the first half. Tons of great levels and ideas. I wrapped up DKC2 today and was ready for it to be over with... now I AM tempted to checkout DKC3 again maybe soon haha. It certainly has more environment variety than DKC2 and cool lush levels like the first game, which I like. The waterfall and underwater levels in particular are dense with atmosphere, the DKC3 water levels are so creepy. It has cool oil factory styled stages again too. ETC!

You can't even wall jump in the Genesis version. What's wrong with Jurassic Park 2? = really weird non-linearity to the level selection / convoluted for no good reason. I condensed your quote to say what I didn't like about it. Maybe the co-op mode takes it up a notch though.

Heh, can't argue. I think growing up when a friend of mine had it or I rented it, the game sunk up a lot of time so I didn't the trial and error level selection. But I think I've only finished it once or twice and that was with a guide for the ideal route. Overall it's one of those games I like to dip into from time to time, but don't really care to beat.
I started Republic Commando but something about it just isn't pulling me in, despite most fans saying it's one of the best Star Wars games out there?

Not terribly far in, I think I took down the first major boss and a few stages beyond. That's where I always forget about it and play something else. I think it's been okay to this point, but nothing mind-blowing. I have definitely heard that the game gets stronger as you go, though. I agree with you that the first game is the best. There's something about it, just a perfect flow to the game that the others struggle to duplicate.

Oh, I forgot, I also tried this game out last night: Gon for SFC. What a weird game. It's based on a manga character IIRC. You play as an angry dinosaur (t-rex?) who's apparent mission is to harass every creature he comes across. Reminded me a little bit of Bonk, but not as fun as Bonk. Apparently you get dropped into an area, and you must kill all other creatures in said area, before you can advance to the next area. You do this by tail whipping, head butting, and butt bouncing. Thing is, enemies' take WAY too many hits, and the gameplay is just paper thin. I don't know, not great. I could appreciate the unusual premise, but the execution did nothing for me.

I borrowed a Gon manga from my public library as a teenager. It was a lot of fun. The crosshatched, pen and ink artwork was pretty meticulous and intense, and absence of spoken dialog was surprisingly clever. I could see a video game adaptation easily turning into a typical lame licensed title, though. Unless some stellar game studio were to get their hands on it. I'm working on Atomic Runner for the Sega Genesis right now. This game is so weird, but I think it's good. The funniest thing about it so far is the stage 2 music, which uses digitized samples for tribal chants ("ooh! ah! ooh! ah!") When the song reaches a crescendo, this guy does an outright Michael Jackson howl ("yaaaaaaahhh!") and it's hilarious. The part I'm referring to is right here.
