I finally scored a copy of Revenant Wings when that retro store in Tupelo closed down. Complete copy, even! The RTS nature gives me pause; not my favorite genre. But then again, I love the Growlanser games, and those have significant RTS elements to them as well. Growlanser II and IV are the ones I've finished, and they're both worthwhile. (I can talk about IV because it was originally on PS2 well before it was ported to PSP; the latter is the only way to experience in English, though.)

Definitely play Growlanser 3 when you get a chance, it's closer to IV than II was. I wish the first got a fan translation, those games are amazing and pretty much occupy a niche all by themselves.

However, there's a fair amount of button controls overlayed with the RTS stuff. And then there are parts where you walk around NPC filled areas and talk to NPCs and buy stuff, and those sections let you move with the d-pad. It's weird, but I like it so far. Has a really nice navigable overworld map too. - I own all the Growlanser games that are in English. I really oughta play 'em. I'm a big fan of Satoshi Urushihara's art style.

I actually have a save file around 22 hours in. I was rolling until memory corruption caused me to lose around six or seven hours of progress. Now every time I try to pick it back up, I'm hopelessly lost trying to figure out where the heck I'm at. I absolutely love the game, though; there really isn't much out there like it, as you say. I knew that we missed out on the first game; wish there was a translation myself. I also wasn't aware that there was a sixth game that we didn't get. Bummer. Although I've not really enjoyed V the times I've tried to jump in, so maybe it's just not as good as the rest of the series.

EX, Growlanser IV (well, the PSP port) is one of the best games I've played in the last few years. You're a fan of strategy RPGs, so I can't imagine you not liking it. It's basically like a SRPG (with towns and exploration) except the battles play out in real time, so there's none of the tedium. The system also allows a lot of customization in terms of the abilities you can give your characters and the story and characters are surprisingly well-written.

Between Sarge's praise and your own, you guys sold me. Looks like I have a mission to obtain Growlanser Wayfarer of Time tonight. One question though; is the plot standalone?

Yeah, it's pretty much its own thing. No prior knowledge needed.
I think the first and second game are linked, though, to some degree, and the sixth is a direct sequel to the fifth game.

I wish I could remember which Growlancer game I played, but whichever one it was... had the worst voice acting imaginable next to Star Ocean 3. And my JRPG dub tolerance is usually pretty high, but holy crap. lol

There's not much in IV; most of it got cut for the English release. I don't remember Generations being that bad, but then again, as long as the dub is somewhat competent, I'm fine. It's when you get into Chaos Wars or Baten Kaitos territory that I just don't want to play your game anymore. Thankfully, the latter has a switch in the options to specifically disable the voice acting out of battle.

Got up to the Stone Temple in FF Mystic Quest last night. I'm really digging it. Though the two character party system kind of sucks haha. Graphically it's like more FF4 and I'm cool with that. The field battle thing is... odd. But it's easy to cruise through this game so far. I like the HP bars but it seems easier to read changing it to normal numbers so I switched that.
Are there no Inn's in this game? That seems weird but it's funny how chests can be farmed since they restock.
