I'll try to toss out some recs when I get a chance. Maybe I should start just throwing NES games out there, it seems to be my go-to platform overall.
A couple of games in my mind that should not be missed if anyone hasn't played them are The Guardian Legend and Bionic Commando.

December's Club Retro theme is rather different. For this theme, you recommend specific games to specific members, or recommend games you think everybody should play. If you recommend games you think everybody should play, try not to make it really obvious popular stuff. - Here are specific games I recommend to specific members:anayo Battlezone (1998 PC) -You like classic PC games, you like RTS, you like FPS, you like combat vehicle sims... this game is all four... and excellent.
Okay, I'll start this in December. It turns out chibby already got me a copy on CD-ROM. Have you played Star Wars Episode One Racing before? If not, that's what I recommend you play in December. It feels like Hydro Thunder combined with F-Zero X.

I think Ex would like that there's Armored Core styled customization to the pod racers and such. It's a long game from what I recall and the difficulty skyrockets, I never beat it.
chibby still busy with school thesedays?

Totally forgot about all those Battlezone sequels. I'm a big fan of the Atari game, obviously.

chibby still busy with school thesedays? I played it in Windows 98 so I don't personally know about the Steam or GOG versions, but I've heard they're good. I don't think Chibby is a full time student anymore, but I did get him to vote in my "Does Max from A Goofy Movie play Sega Genesis or SNES?" poll.

Battlezone is so good. I remember watching my brother play that one back in the day.

Okay, I'll start this in December. It turns out chibby already got me a copy on CD-ROM. BattleZone 1998 is an amazing game. I say that from experience, as I beat it back in 2002. However, I strongly recommend you read the manual before playing: www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.2126I have played but not finished Battlezone II: Combat Commander (1999). It's on my "need to beat someday" list. There's also Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs (2000) which is an N64 exclusive. Always meant to check that one out, will someday. Yes I played the PS1 version many years ago. Can't remember if I beat it or not. It reminded me more of Wipeout than F-Zero. I'm open to more recommendations though! Give me something legitimately good and relatively short and I'll beat it. Not looking to get into a 30+ hour RPG right now.

I think that's the boat I've been in for a while - not feeling super long games. Yet... I keep buying them. I have a sickness, I think.

For me it's not that I'm not feeling super long games. But rather I'm already 118 hours into a super long game at the moment (RDR2). So I don't to add another RPG on top of it in tandem.
I recommended Dark Souls to you because it's legitimately awesome, but DS also takes 40-70 hours to finish, depending on if one uses a magic user/walkthrough and does the DLC. Ace Combat 5 is only 7 hours long however, and it'd be unlike anything you've ever beaten before. But if you just want to play an old 2D platformer, The Scheme (PC-88) is a fun "metroidvania" history lesson that's not too long.

Gah, my 360's drive has decided it doesn't want to read discs consistently, at least the boot sector portion. It's fine if it ever catches that and spins up, though, so that's weird. Probably need to pop it open and clean it. Or maybe it's just time to try to mod this system.
I did start up Dark Souls (again), so we'll see if I stick with it. I feel like perhaps I should play via the remastered version, though - the frame rate definitely chugs in spots, and I've heard horror stories about Blighttown.
