Mega Man 3 | ~1h17m
Yup, still think MM3 is the chosen one in ways and a 12/10.
- Introduces a handful of cool new things. Mega's robot dog companion Rush makes his debut, the awesome slide mechanics is introduced spicing up the level design, and best of all Proto Man! Always loved bad guys as a kid and antiheroes like him were even cooler. Zero is such a bad ripoff... - Graphics are leveling up, especially with the boss designs looking a lot more distinct and complicated - Game does have some slowdown/flickering more than usual in some spots, the low point of MM3 to some but it's never irked me that much - Difficulty starts easing off a tad here, it's easy to stock up on Lives/E-Tanks throughout. But the repeat stages with the MM2 bosses returning can be tough to knock out in one go and some of the new normal bosses are tricky without their weakness being exploited
- I still like that there's no Mega Buster, so you have to work to take down some enemies and figure out boss weaknesses - The OST is just incredible. MM2 might have some classic bangers, but MM3's OST is more varied, dynamic, even moody with some tracks, and it all sounds sublime
A time capsule to the good ol' days:

So I've tried various Mega Man games through the years, and never could get into any of them. They felt stiff and unpleasant to me, the basic weapon is so weak that you have to shoot enemies over and over, so there's no flow to it... But if I'm going to give just one of those games one more try - at least 30-45 minutes - which one should it be? 2, 3? Or another?

Level up your button mash. Several enemies and projectiles go down in one hit...

Xeo - Sounded like you liked 3 even more?
Is there an English version of that commercial or did they create that animation just for France? Either way, if Mario's right that Mega Man is more mega than ever in MM2, I guess I'll go with that one. I'll give it a shot before this month is over, ON MY GAMER HONOR.

Remember we're doing dual/double months now... no excuses! I think MM2 and MM3 are typically the two fan favorites, with some others picking another one here and there. But MM2 is the one that really perfected the blueprint and is iconic. I like MM3 even more personally but yeah I think MM2 is the one to check out first, if you don't want to play the original. The first game is still great, it's just a little weirder and rougher around the edges. In my 30 some years of playing these games, don't think I've since a single person on this green Earth declare MM1 their favorite, lol. I'm sure there's someone out there... It's not quite a run and gun like Contra, but if you shoot fast you don't have to stop moving a lot of times.
Normally I probably would have beaten all 6 again over the weekend but I was going hard on wrapping up DQ11 and then had a big AEW PPV to watch tonight which was awesome. Looking forward to MM4-6 though. MM4 is probably the most nostalgic for me, I wonder if I should try to not use the Mega Buster though, it's so BUSTED in that one. MM5 is when the graphics start looking insane and bosses just look incredible in MM6.
hah, these are neat:

did they create that animation just for France? France only commercial far as I know. L'honneur du joueur ne signifie rien si l'on manque de respect à méga homme deux.

Mega Man 4 | ~1h16m
Pharaoh Man in da house! Probably my favorite MM4 Robot Master, such a cool iconic level and design.
- This is probably the most nostalgic MM game for me next to MM2, but I bet I rented and played MM4 even more. Love the stage select theme in this one and everything just looks and feels amazing. It's so cool that something I loved 30 some years ago is still as fun as ever.
- MM4 introduces the infamous Mega Buster, the charge shot and it is busted as ever in its debut game. You can still melt some bosses quicker with the weapon they're weak against, but the Mega Buster is good against them all too. Mega retains the charge shot even after being hit, something the series changes later on to balance things out. - This is the beginning of "It's not Dr. Wily but ooops is it?" that gets comical from this entry onward for the rest of the NES ones. But it's all good fun and a nice excuse to get more levels at the end, with two big enemy bases to tackle in MM4-MM6. - Polish is a bit sharper than MM3, reading up on them, I can see how development was probably smoother here. MM4 is cleaaaaan. - It also introduces "Eddie", the item spawning robot you see at some point in a level generally. With RNG on your side, you'll get a 1up or E-Tank. Pretty easy to stock up on both either way as they're peppered throughout some stages and easy to get.
- The first very "weird" final boss fight that's a bit more annoying than fun. Strange gimmick.
- The OST seems a bit weaker than before all around but then it drops some of my favorite bangers in between:
Proto Man is sadly on vacation in MM4. But we get a whole lot of him in MM5...

The other advantage with Mega Man 2 is that it gives you the ridiculously overpowered Metal Blades.
Also, difficult mode is the most in line with the main series, but if you don't like stuff feeling more bullet-spongey, normal mode sees enemies take a lot less hits. Might be a good gateway. (I think it's a little too easy in that mode, though.)

Just thought I'd mention I played MM2 for like... 10-15 minutes. Too early to tell, I'll play it a little more. It's just so weird to me that he can't crouch. Right in the first level I played (Air Man), there were enemies you could really use crouching against. Shinobi came out in 1987 and not only could you crouch, you could even crouch walk (very useful for the first boss, actually), so it's not like it wasn't a thing. It's something I hate about NES action platformers, they always seem to revel in forcing weird movement restrictions on you. Like *@*@$ Castlevania and it's stupid-ass jump backwards when you get hit. Or its regular jumps. They just love stiffness.
I actually made it at least 1/3 through Mega Man Legends years ago, too. I liked the gameplay fine, I just wasn't a fan of the game world/aesthetic (though the actual graphics were quite clean for the time). But I will say that it wasn't bad at all.
