On #3, yeah it could have been System Shock haha. These games do tell you what to do, within the context of audio logs, emails, and visual cues, but they absolutely do not hold your hand at all. A different era before the dreaded objective arrows and crap.
I thought the Enhanced Edition of the original was very playable and good (despite my gripes with the enemy respawn rates). But yeah I guess if you get more enjoyment using the authentic old version and hardware, that could be fun.
I do remember that when I looked into getting a copy of System Shock maybe 10 years ago, it was an expensive game. That's because it was trapped in its original form without any GOG or Steam re-releases for a while. So, actual copies used to cost a lot of money on eBay. Grim Fandango used to be that way, too. I suspect The Neverhood might still be.
I think compared to Thief and other similar games, I'd say System Shock has a little more dosage of instant gratification. Kind of weird to say that since it's kind of a strange issue with modern civilization in ways. But yeah just thinking of those games, in SS1 you're getting around the levels, picking things up, and doing something almost constantly. It's really dense and keeps you on your toes. Hopefully that makes sense, because that's certainly the case with Thief and the like too. But in some of those games you can breath a little more and take your time in spots.
Okay, if SS1 is easier than Thief that doesn't sound too overwhelming. Thief was a very rich experience, but when I got to the end, I thought, "Wow, that took a lot out of me."
