anayoWith FM synthesis, it's often a culmination of multiple frequencies operating in resonance that create a singular "instrument". This technique was done for Genesis/Mega Drive OSTs. There were also tools that would take an analog sample sound and create a timbre profile for sine wave operators to mimic. Many years ago, I used to professionally create my own VSTs (effects units and synthesizers) and electronic music (with vocals). I say "professionally" because I profitably sold my VSTs and music. This era was from 2000-2010. I eventually burned out on it and moved on to other creative endeavors. The point is, I understand how challenging this stuff is. Creating quality FM sounds from scratch is tricky, all hail the DX7.

I wasn't cut out for it, but I did walk away with a deeper understanding and appreciation for how sound engineering worked in my childhood Sega games. And afterwards I could better discern when developers just phoned it in with the crappy default Gems sound driver, or when they hired geniuses who get in under the hood and program their own. M.U.S.H.A. is a masterpiece.

Sapphire looks gorgeous, and that soundtrack (T's Music, the same ones that did Gate/Lords of Thunder) literally rocks. But my primary complaint is that all the ships except one are too slow. It's very much a "memorize these patterns and know where to be" game, because the slower ships have a tough time dodging attacks based on reflexes. I still liked it, though, and gave it the same score as Spriggan, a 7.5/10.

I had always put Sapphire in my "definitely play this later" mental filing cabinet, too. Oh well. I still like the genre, and 7.5/10 is enough for me to still play it one day.

More or less the same team made Gate of Thunder, which looks like just a standard shmup but is well-known for being one of the best on the PCE-CD. Which is agree with. I couldn't get into Sapphire at all.

Frick, did I play Robo Aleste? Now I'm not sure since Seirei Senshi Spriggan got mentioned. Ummm... I'm going to guess I didn't like either of those very much. I have Seirei Senshi Spriggan logged on HLTB, I beat it last year apparently.

Here's what I do. Watch Shmup Junkie's full length feature film reviews throughout a week or so and note down the ones that standout to you.

I put thousands of hours into this stuff back then. the TG16 is a bit saturated with shmups and it gave me genre fatigue It's true the shmup genre is over represented on TG16/TGCD/PCE/PCECD, which is great for hardcore shmup fans, but a bit overkill for everybody else. Here's some more games that the M.U.S.H.A. composer was involved with: www.mobygames.com/person/199018/toshiaki-sakoda/credits/
